The Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 7900 XTX deliver surprisingly similar gaming performance across 51 modern titles and graphics configurations.

The Radeon RX 9070 XT and Radeon RX 7900 XTX remain competitive high-end graphics cards, but they come from different GPU generations. They perform similarly in recent games, but ray tracing, memory size, upscaling tech, and price make the decision harder. Join us as we compare 51 titles to see how AMD’s old flagship has aged and whether the newer RDNA 4 GPU offers enough for its price.

Radeon RX 9070 XT vs. RX 7900 XTX: Gaming Performance

The Radeon RX 9070 XT is priced around $900 in the US, making it a tempting option for high-end gaming. That said, the RX 7900 XTX remains a strong option, especially for anyone looking for used hardware with 24GB of VRAM.

We tested on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D machine with 32GB of DDR5-6000 RAM and the latest available display drivers. We tested both GPUs in 51 games at 1440p and 4K with various graphics presets and ray tracing settings.

The results show roughly equal performance in most titles. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced saw the RX 7900 XTX lead by 6-7% on Very High settings, but with extended ray tracing enabled, the margin dropped to 3-5%. Black Myth: Wukong also liked the older GPU by up to 6% at 4K.

Borderlands 4 had mixed results, and Crimson Desert showed an 11% edge to the RX 7900 XTX at 1440p with Medium settings. But in all other situations, the differences were minor.

Ray Tracing Favors the Newer RDNA 4 Architecture

When rasterization performance is neck and neck, the RX 9070 XT often wins in demanding ray-tracing applications. In Doom: The Dark Ages, it offered 10% better performance at 4K with Ultra Nightmare settings. Forza Horizon 6 followed the same pattern. At 4K, the RX 9070 XT was only 3% faster in rasterization, but it was 23% faster with ray tracing on.

The gap was much bigger in GTA V, where the newer GPU outperformed the RX 7900 XTX by 35% at 1440p and 33% at 4K with maxed-out ray tracing settings. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 also preferred the RX 9070 XT, gaining up to 22% extra performance at 1440p with ray tracing cranked to the maximum. But the older flagship still wins a few games, showing that RDNA 4 doesn’t always equal higher performance across the board.

Where the RX 7900 XTX Maintains Its Advantage

The RX 7900 XTX has more memory bandwidth and computing reylines, the older GPU was 12-13% faster at 1440p, depending on the graphics preset. The advantage was significantly greater in Counter-Strike 2. The RX 7900 XTX was 18% quicker at 1440p and 25% faster at 4K using Medium. On Very High settings, that advantage grew to 22% and 32%, respectively

Fortnite also preferred the RX 7900 XTX when running at 4K, where it was 18% faster without ray tracing and 14% faster with ray tracing on. But across all 51 games, most performance differences stayed around 10%, meaning both GPUs deliver similar gaming experiences.

VRAM and FSR 4.1 Create Important Differences

The RX 7900 XTX has 24GB of VRAM compared to 16GB on the RX 9070 XT and about 50% more memory bandwidth. These benefits can help with heavily modded games, high-resolution textures, huge 3D projects, and local AI tasks that need extra memory.

Both GPUs support FSR 4.1 upscaling, but their implementations differ. The RX 9070 XT employs FP8 acceleration and supports newer machine-learning frame creation and ray regeneration technologies tied to FSR Redstone. The RX 7900 XTX relies on inference processing, which adds overhead, and it doesn’t support some RDNA 4-specific capabilities.

AMD says that FSR 4.1 processing takes around 1.3ms at 4K on the RX 9070 XT, against 3.1ms on the RX 7900 XTX. The newer GPU also supports PCIe 5.0; however, PCIe 4.0 x16 is still plenty for most gaming workloads.

Which Radeon GPU Offers Better Value?

The RX 9070 XT costs roughly $900 in the US, and used RX 7900 XTX cards sell for about $800-$1,100. So, all in all, the newer GPU is generally the better pick for gamers. It offers similar rasterizing speed, better ray tracing in many titles, and more efficient access to AMD’s latest capabilities.

But existing RX 7900 XTX users have little motivation to upgrade, as the performance difference is usually too minor to warrant changing your graphics card. Overall, the RX 7900 XTX has done surprisingly well, but the RX 9070 XT is a more well-rounded package for newcomers to the ecosystem.
