AMD Confirms FSR 4 Will Ship To APUs, Gaming Laptops And Handhelds By The End Of 2026

Being the best AMD upscaling technology, FSR 4 needs to work on more devices apart from the RX 9000/7000 series.

Jack Huynh Says AMD is Set to Expand FSR 4 to APUs, Gaming Laptops, and Handhelds Before 2027

AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 4.0 remains strictly reserved for a few GPU lineups. Since the launch of the RDNA 4-based Radeon RX 9000 series, AMD took over a year to announce FSR 4’s availability to older GPUs such as the RDNA 3-based Radeon RX 7000 series. However, AMD is soon going to bring the technology to the RDNA 2-based Radeon RX 6000 series in early 2027.

Uncertainty about FSR 4’s support on AMD APUs still existed to this day until AMD announced big news. Korean publication The Elec reports that AMD’s Jack Huynh has announced that the FSR 4 upscaler will arrive on more AMD products before the year ends. According to Jack, AMD is working to expand the FSR 4 technology on AMD APUs, enabling the technology to work in gaming handhelds and gaming laptops based on these SoCs.

We will expand the machine-learning-based AI FSR4 technology, which was first introduced in discrete graphics cards, to our entire product lineup, including APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices, by the end of this year.

    – Jack Huynh, Senior Vice President and GM, Computing and Graphics Group, AMD

Here, we see AMD working on a lighter and more optimized FSR 4 model for the APUs that will aim to bring better image quality while keeping the latency much lower. This is crucial for smoother and more pleasant gameplay, and APUs need it since they lack enough raw power to compete with dedicated GPUs such as the Radeon RX 9000 series. Even though we now have powerful RDNA 3.5-based Radeon 8060S and Radeon 8050S iGPUs, they still work on the INT8 data type compared to the latest RDNA 4 series.

Still, it’s big news for handheld owners, as maintaining high frame rates without losing visual fidelity is a big challenge when modern games run on APUs. And now, while you wait for AMD to drop FSR 4 support for existing APUs, AMD might be working to bring FSR 4 support to the RDNA 4m architecture already.
