TL;DR: The cloud-only Switch version of Aliens: Fireteam Elite stopped working on August 5, leaving owners with only an apology and a planned discounted voucher for the sequel on Switch 2; no refunds were announced, and affected players must effectively buy the new native Switch 2 release to regain play.

The Nintendo Switch version of Aliens: Fireteam Elite stopped working on August 5, leaving everyone who paid for it with little more than an apology and an offer for a discount on another game.

The Switch port launched in April 2023, but unlike the PS5, Xbox, and PC versions, which can be downloaded and played offline, the Switch edition was cloud-only. The hardware was not deemed powerful enough to run the game natively, so it was streamed from servers instead.

The standard edition cost $29.99, while the Ultimate Edition, which bundled in a collection of DLC, cost $59.99. When Cold Iron Studios announced in March that those servers would shut down on August 5, it did not announce any refunds for affected owners.

After significant backlash and widespread coverage, the developer said it is working on a program that would offer affected Switch owners a discounted voucher toward Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, which launches on Switch 2 later this year as a native game rather than a cloud version. Details on eligibility have not been finalized. For now, the offer essentially amounts to paying again, albeit at a discount, for a sequel to a game owners already paid for but can no longer play.

Why did the Switch version of Aliens: Fireteam Elite stop working on August 5?

Was the Switch edition of Aliens: Fireteam Elite a cloud-only release or available for local download?

Did Cold Iron Studios offer refunds to Switch owners after the server shutdown was announced?

How did the performance or hardware limitations influence the decision to make the original Switch version cloud-only?

The shutdown lands in the middle of an ongoing debate about digital game ownership, particularly following Sony’s announcement that it will end physical disc production. Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 launches August 25 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, with a Switch 2 version to follow later. Meanwhile, Fireteam Elite remains fully playable on every other platform it launched on.
