The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) is continuing its fight against the tax hike, going as high as 570 per cent, proposed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). On October 13, Suresh Shyamlal Gupta, President, AICWA, met Ashish Shelar, Maharashtra’s Minister of Cultural Affairs, followed by meetings with Akash Pandurang Fundkar, Minister of Labour, and Ashish Jaiswal, Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Labour, urging them to drop the proposed tax.
Speaking to mid-day, Gupta recalled that he explained to the ministers the tax surge’s adverse effects. “I told them that if this 570 per cent hike is implemented, then the ticket price will increase, which will lead people to go to theatres less. In turn, theatres will suffer huge losses and shut down.
