A Windows Emulator Is Running Half

You install it from SideQuest rather than the Horizon Store. The project’s own site is blunt about why: official storefronts restrict the low-level Android APIs the app needs, so the app lives outside them. The current build, Computers Are Totally Screwed 27, shipped on July 1. A developer credited as Luboš V. handles the XR integration, on top of Winlator Cmod, itself a fork of Brunodev85’s original Winlator.

The claim reached a large audience through Nathie, whose VR channel runs to 809,000 subscribers and 1,500 videos. “You can now play Half-Life 2 VR entirely standalone on Quest 3,” he posted on Thursday afternoon, over a two and a half minute clip credited to Hostile VR rather than shot by him. The project’s compatibility list supports the narrow version of that. Half-Life 2 is marked as working on Quest 3 and on the Pico 4 Ultra. So is Portal. A Korean VR channel called SideBook VR posted a four minute Half-Life 2 standalone test on Monday, then a longer updated run and a Portal 1 test on Tuesday.

    The tracking arrives over UDP

Here is where it stops resembling what most people picture. WinlatorXR does not introduce itself to a Windows game as a VR runtime. It has its own interface, XrAPI, currently at version 0.5, and it talks over UDP on localhost.

Head pose and controller state go out on port 7872. The game replies on port 7278 with a string of floats. The game renders side by side or alternate eye stereo itself. And to keep the compositor locked to the right frame, the Windows app has to paint a sync counter into the top left corner of its own image as a shade of red, which WinlatorXR then reads back off the picture.

The project’s documentation is honest about what that is. XrAPI is not built to replace an OpenXR runtime, and it has to be implemented per game or per mod. Launching a title in WinlatorXR does not make it a VR game. Somebody has to wire up that specific title first. That work is done for Halo: Combat Evolved, which the project ships as a mod called HWXR, and there is a sample project named SixDOFinator for anyone who wants to try it on something else.

    What Valve refused stops mattering

The Half-Life 2 VR Mod team settled the standalone question years ago, and the answer is still sitting on their FAQ. There is no legally available Android build of theport, so the team said it would not pursue a standalone release

WinlatorXR gets around that by porting nothing at all. It runs the Windows build you already bought, on the headset, through several layers of emulation, slowly. No license changes hands. The catch sits upstream of the graphics. The mod requires that you own Half-Life 2 on Steam, and WinlatorXR’s own app list marks the Steam client itself as not working on Quest 2, Quest 3, or Pico 4 Ultra. Their newest setup guide covers playing games from Steam anyway, and a sibling project, GameNativeXR, is building the store integrations. Expect that seam to be where your evening goes.
