Super Mario fans are working on a new custom expansion for Super Mario Bros. Wonder which introduces a bunch of new levels inspired by Super Mario Galaxy.

As one of the most popular Nintendo games of all time, Super Mario Galaxy continues to delight fans to this very day thanks to its charming graphics and timeless gameplay.

In our review of the Switch collection from last year, we said it featured “two of the greatest video games of all time,” and had “perfect platforming action”.

If Nintendo re-releasing Super Mario Galaxy and also doing a movie adaptation wasn’t enough, you’ll soon be able to play a bunch of Super Mario Galaxy-inspired levels inside Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Developed by Team Fury, the expansion is titled Super Mario Galactic Wonder and is a mod for the Switch version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder which adds 10 new levels to the game.

These new levels add themes, items, and enemies inspired by the Super Mario Galaxy games, essentially turning it into a 2D version of the original Wii games. In particular, we know that the expansion features backdrops inspired by different Super Mario Galaxy locations as well.

The trailer, which I’ve embedded below, doesn’t give a lot more away, but it does tease some of the levels which are included in the mod.

Super Mario Galactic Wonder is a big Mario expansion to keep an eye on next year

Reception to the mod’s announcement has been positive, with many Super Mario fans eager to get their hands on the expansion when it launches.

“Now THIS is how you give respect to Super Mario Galaxy,” reads one comment underneath the YouTube trailer.

“Makes me wonder why Nintendo didn’t do this in promotion for their movie. Well, to be fair, we at least got Rosalina and Luma in the Switch 2 Edition,” reads a comment from another fan.

“Wow, I’m shocked at how well people are learning to mod this game, despite its recency! Usually, for Super Mario games, it takes at least half a decade or so before people manage to implement brand new levels, enemies, items and so on… Looks super fun,” reads a third comment.

A specific release date for Super Mario Galactic Wonder isn’t clear yet, but Team Fury has given a rather vague 2027 window for the mod’s launch.

Of course, in order to play this mod you’ll need access to either a modded Nintendo Switch or emulate it on another compatible device. You’ll also need to own a copy of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, or else it’ll be unplayable.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder released in 2023 for Nintendo Switch, where it became one of the bestselling games of the year.

The game plays similarly to other 2D Mario games, with the player controlling the titular character and his companions as they journey through various levels and worlds while avoiding enemies.

A Nintendo Switch 2 version was announced in late 2025, releasing earlier this year and featuring some Super Mario Galaxy content in the form of Rosalina and Luma as bonus characters.
