I thought that as a TV Editor, I watched a lot of TV. Then I went on maternity leave and watched a lot of TV. Now I’m back to work with a stricter view than ever on what is and isn’t good telly – and so I can assure you that the following September picks are most definitely worth your time. From true-crime horror penned by your favorite screenwriter to a farewell season of a beloved sitcom – here are the shows to watch…
The Gentlemen – Netflix (September 3)
Even without the furore of Meghan Markle potentially joining season two, The Gentlemen’s return is definitely worth a conversation at the office water cooler. Starring The White Lotus star Theo James as a Duke turned drug baron, watch this Guy Ritchie favourite sit smugly atop Netflix’s trending TV shows for weeks to come.
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story – Netflix (September 5)
In his quest to adapt every serial killer’s life story, Glee creator Ryan Murphy is back with his murderous anthology series, this time focusing on a famous female killer from the 1800s who was acquitted of the axe murders of her father and stepmother.
Although the Monster series is occasionally too much for me (I watched the first episode of the Jeffrey Dahmer one before I remembered I had free will and didn’t need to know more), you can’t deny that Ryan makes seriously good TV – and the Lizzie Borden instalment will be just as popular as its predecessors, I’m sure.
Last Seen – Apple TV+ (September 9)
Colin from Accounts star Patrick Brammall is returning to his dramatic roots with a police drama about a dispatcher who hears a distress call from a teenage girl who he is convinced is actually his daughter Maggie, who disappeared 11 years earlier. Sometimes Apple TV shows can go under the radar so make sure you don’t miss out on this one.
Colin from Accounts – Paramount+ (September 10)
Speaking of Patrick Brammall, the Australian star is booked and busy as he returns to his brilliant comedy show for a third and final outing. Starring alongside his real-life partner Harriet Dyer, who also co-wrote the show, the pair play a couple who date after accidentally injuring and then adopting a dog – the titular Colin – and it has been on top of every comedy list ever since. I adored the first two seasons and totally respect their decision to keep audiences wanting more by delivering a top-tier season three – and I will be lapping up every single episode this September.
