MUMBAI: Hollywood is learning that when attention spans shrink, the screen can still deliver a big drama, just in smaller doses. Actors, producers and investors are increasingly moving into microdramas, a mobile-first scripted format built around short episodes, as the entertainment business searches for quicker and cheaper ways to create and monetise content.

Designed primarily for phone screens, microdramas typically run for only a few minutes, packing romance, heightened drama, twists and cliffhangers into bite-sized episodes. The format first gained popularity in China and is now expanding internationally, with viewers sometimes paying to unlock the next instalment.

The business is growing quickly. Omdia estimates US microdrama revenue will reach $1.5 billion in 2026, while platforms including ReelShort and DramaBox have built businesses around the format. TikTok has also entered the space with PineDrama, signalling that vertical scripted entertainment is moving beyond its niche origins.

Hollywood’s interest is coming in several forms — from acting and producing to platform-building and investment.

James Franco is among the latest established actors to step into the format. He stars in Love, Lies & Frank, available exclusively on Shortical, playing an advertising agency CEO whose life becomes tangled in crime, werewolves and a forbidden romance.

The series is also among the first microseries produced under SAG-AFTRA’s new verticals agreement, a union contract covering low-budget microdramas. Franco’s involvement comes as he attempts to rebuild his career following sexual misconduct allegations and a 2021 legal settlement. Variety reviewed the series critically, saying Franco appeared to be “sleepwalking through his lines”.

Others are approaching the format from behind the camera. Issa Rae’s Hoorae Media partnered with TikTok’s PineDrama in May for Screen Time, a thriller about two couples whose double date takes a sinister turn when someone takes control of their television and forces them to confront their secrets.

The series clocked up nearly 75 million views in its first week, becoming the top-performing vertical series on TikTok and PineDrama at the time. It has since crossed 150 million views.

Modern Family actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson is also developing Theater Kids Vs. Zombies for vertical storytelling platform aTwist. The musical comedy follows theatre students trapped inside a zombie-infested high school who attempt to survive by putting on a musical.

Taye Diggs has taken an even broader route into the business. He stars in and executive produces Off Limits & All Mine for CandyJar, playing a widowed mogul who becomes involved in a forbidden relationship with his best friend’s adult daughter.

Diggs has also launched Microhouse Films, a mobile-first vertical storytelling platform intended to give filmmakers greater control over production and monetisation. Its debut slate included eight projects, among them Tides of Temptation, developed with Lifetime.

Then there is Kim Kardashian, who has entered the sector from the investment side. Kardashian, her mother Kris Jenner and other angel investors have backed GammaTime, a company developing a premium microdrama platform.

The rush towards the format reflects a broader shift in both production economics and audience behaviour. Studios and creators are looking for ways to make scripted entertainment faster and at lower cost, while actors and crews face fewer opportunities through traditional production channels.

At the same time, TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts are competing aggressively for viewers’ attention. Microdramas effectively take the language of short-form social video and add the hooks of scripted television giving Hollywood a new way to chase audiences that may not have the patience for an hour-long episode, but will happily watch the next three-minute cliffhanger.
