You already know that the news of Sony wanting to remove the physical format from PlayStation by 2028 has not gone down well with its PS5 community, but things are not going very well at gamescom 2026 either.

According to reports, there are many negative reactions towards the brand and even tension with some developers. Yes, Take-Two and Capcom support the decision, but there may be few or no others.

As Nash Weedle reports from backstage at gamescom, the company may have confirmed its plans again and ignored criticism from users, but on September 1, it will be two months since that announcement and the situation has not improved.

Criticism of Sony for Removing PlayStation’s Physical Format Is Being Seen at gamescom

According to Weedle, reactions from the public at the German video game event are very similar to those filling every PlayStation post on social media.

The influencer says that, at least when it comes to marketing, this is affecting them and they are planning to make changes to their communication and planning.

In addition, several third-party studios reportedly prefer not to be linked with PlayStation for the time being. This is because PlayStation’s recent marketing posts are being filled with comments saying, “NO DISC NO BUY” and similar messages.

Nonetheless, despite all this criticism, it remains to be seen whether Sony will reverse its decision. There is still a long way to go until 2028 and until we see the PlayStation 6, but this situation makes it clear that the company could lose many users if it decides to remove the physical format from its consoles.

It’s also worth noting that Sony has previously said it will cautiously move forward with its plans to end physical PlayStation game discs in 2028, adding that the backlash has had no impact on its business so far.

In related news, publishers stand to save up to $16 for every game copy sold once physical discs are completely removed.
