Garth Ennis and John McCrea, the creators of DC’s Hitman, are reteaming at Image Comics on The Snail, a “disturbing” and “psychedelic” comic from the horror imprint Ninth Circle. Colored by Jack Davies, and lettered by Rob Steen, the 40-page one-shot revolves around a down-on-his-luck loser, who is approached by… a talking snail.
The synopsis simply asks, “When you are offered your heart’s desire, what (and who) are you willing to sacrifice to achieve it? And should you really be making that deal with a… talking snail?” The press release also teases themes of “lust, power, and possession.”
Ennis says, “It might be said that a talking snail is not the best taking advice from nowadays, perhaps it’s no worse than any of the other options? Find out in The Snail, by myself and the good Mr. McCrea. If I was a talking snail I’d definitely be telling you to buy it.”
McCrea adds, “When Garth asks you to work on a horror title with him, you have to be ready for some disturbing shit. I said yes and wasn’t ready. This is some disturbing shit.” The book marks the first from the Ninth Circle imprint (formed in 2024) since Gray Lady, which was released at the end of 2025.
The comic will be released on November 11, and retail for $5.99. It should be acknowledged that, at the time of writing, Image still plans to release the new Warren Ellis book Ghost Drive Station, but editor Katie West, who was one of Ellis’s first victims to come forward, has said she hopes readers do not boycott other creators published by the company.
In the meantime, you can read a four-page preview below, and browse Image’s full November solicits here.
