Mindy Kaling‘s Murray Hill lease is up.

Two months after Not Suitable for Workconcluded its first season with a shocking cliffhanger, her new series was canceled by Hulu, E! News has confirmed.

The nine-episode show—which starred Jack Martin, Avantika, Ella Hunt, Nicholas Duvernay and Will Angus—followed five working professionals in their early 20s as they navigate love, life and drama while living in the same New York City apartment building.

The final episode concluded with Hunt’s AJ finally kissing Davis (Angus) on New Year‘s Eve after learning that her coworker had a months-long crush on her. However, the moment was seen by Davis’ best friend Josh Teitelbaum (Martin)—who recently mended his relationship with AJ after ghosting her following a college hookup years earlier—as romantic feelings began to blossom between him and his neighbor.

E! News has reached out to Hulu for comment and has not yet heard back.

Following the news, Kaling expressed gratitude for the cast and crew on social media, writing in her Aug. 25 caption, “I love this show, I loved making this show, I love these people, and I love all of you for all your sweet comments, messages, edits and for watching.”

The Office alum previously revealed that she always knew the finale would end with Josh witnessing the next step in AJ—with whom the nepo baby/aspiring journalist was planning to ring in the new year before seeing the kiss—and Davis’ dynamic.

“When I was still working on the pilot for the show two years ago, the image of Josh walking down the hallway—and before I even knew what was going to happen in the first season,” she explained to TVLine in a June interview, “I really wanted the last image of season one to be him seeing his best friend who he loves kissing the girl of his dreams, which is someone that he has complicated feelings about.”

“We kind of worked backwards from that moment,” she continued. “When I was hiring staff, I already knew that was going to be the last moment, and that doesn’t happen that often.”

And when it came to the future of the show—which had several star-studded cameos, including Gigi Hadid, Ego Nwodim and Constance Wu—Kaling, 47, admitted that the storyline was “really wide open.”

“I love secrets and the lies in the show, so deciding whether or not Josh was going to tell Davis and AJ that he saw the kiss,” she added, “whether Josh was even gonna show up at all anymore for that night, those were all the things we knew we had to pay off. But it was really fun figuring out where we were gonna go, and I had no idea.”
