AEW had a monster Thursday at SDCC. First, their “Rise Inside the Ring and Beyond” panel was crashed Mercedes Monet when she comes in to pour more gasoline on the fire Britt Baker Started with forbidden doorlead Tony Khan confirm their match All-in August 25 at Wembley Stadiumth. Second, they announced a new AEW comic from DC Comics (which was announced a while ago but now has the cover highlighted on the wrestler’s social media pages). Third, the doors are once again open for a one-of-a-kind tournament, pitting AEW stars against Adult Swim characters in tag team matches.
This match will result in the crowning of the first-ever “Spoilage Fight” championship belt.
The card includes Johnny TV and Taya Valkyrie vs. Fang (original) and meat dumplings (Aqua teen hunger power) followed by Orange Cassidy and Willow Nightingale to Rachel (Yolo) and Mr. Frog (smiling friends). The winners of the first two games will compete for the title in the third game.
Fang and Meatwad put on a show to kick off the night. The smooching duo of Johnny TV and Taya arrogantly underestimated the Adult Swim creatures and nearly got ripped off by them. Meatball, in particular, won over the crowd as he pounded and splashed Johnny TV around the ring. Unfortunately, Taya comes to the rescue. While Fang had her moments, it wasn’t enough for Adult Swim to win. The crowd showed them a lot of love though, chanting Meatwad’s name throughout the game.
Cassidy and Nightingale also have trouble defeating their Adult Swim counterparts, as a half-drunk Rachel walks out with two beer bottles in hand, while Mr. Frog rushes out with murderous intent. Audience favorites Cassidy and Nightingale were apparently weirded out by Mr. Frog. The match continued outside the ring for quite some time, with Frog and Rachel chasing Cassidy and Nightingale around the barricade before finally making their move inside the ring. At one point, Rachel tried to jump off the top rope, but due to her drunkenness, she temporarily lost consciousness and fell sideways. There, Cassidy and Nightingale returned to form and helped Adult Swim pick up another AEW win, securing an AEW Finals showdown.
The match between Johnny TV and Taya versus Cassidy and Nightingale was fast and furious, with the Cassidy/Nightingale ticket winning in the end. As the winners celebrated their Booty Battle Championship victory, Johnny TV and Taya decided to ruin their moment with a vicious attack. What made it special was the interference from Frog and Rachel, who were joined by Johnny TV and Taya (who shared some more kisses) to defeat the new champion.
Then, at the critical moment of the rescue, Svor Rick and Svor Summer appeared in the cheering crowd. They cleared the ring of losers and helped Cassidy and Nightingale fight back. The bad guys lost, the good guys won, Rachel’s beer was shared between them, and AEW reigned supreme.
AEW needs to do more of this at conventions, although it may not always be with cartoon characters as the novelty will wear off. Still, it felt good to have a wrestling match inside a prison. This is a space full of fans who want to make unique memories of their sessions that they can then tell everyone about. That was certainly enough for those in attendance.
AEW stars are great sports stars and their job is to sell matches. The fans were happy and their energy basically let SDCC know they would be there to support if this happened again next year. Even Tony Khan showed up to thank the audience. It’s a great night for wrestling fans at a comic convention.
