The Xbox Series X25 was revealed back at Microsoft’s summer gaming showcase and it might be the best-looking console since the flurry of translucent hardware we saw in the late ’90s. Unfortunately, the nostalgia is going to cost you. The green, see-through plastic box will be priced around $900, according to a new leak.
Billbil-kun at Dealabs Magazine, who previously revealed the $80 price tag of the accompanying translucent green X25 Xbox controller, now claims that the console will be €899.99 in Europe, or about $900 here in the U.S. The controller will reportedly ship in October, followed by the console in November, just in time for the holiday season. But there’s not going to be any Black Friday deal on this thing.
That price tag is $100 more than the current $800 1TB Xbox Series X with a disc drive, which is itself the same price as the 2TB PlayStation 5 Pro. It’s unclear if the “OG Green” Xbox Series X25 will have additional storage, but I’m guessing no. You’ll essentially be paying close to $1,000 for a machine that performs exactly the same as one that launched for $500 back in 2020.
This shouldn’t come as a shock. Microsoft has been hiking prices on its gaming hardware in reaction to the rest of the company, along with AI hyperscalers, investing billions in a datacenter race that’s driven unprecedented shortages for components like RAM and storage. But it is a bit of a dampener on the whole X25 celebration, especially as fans prepare to shell out what will undoubtedly be a lot of money for the upcoming Project Helix next-gen machine that’s expected to arrive sometime between 2027 and 2028.
If you want to shell out for an actual piece of history instead, well, even the original Halo Edition Xbox will cost you. Models in good shape are currently going for around $750 on eBay.
