How to bring Frank Miller comics to the big screen, from the woman who helps make it happen, SIlenn Thomas
Silenn Thomas spoke to Popverse about working with Frank Miller and how his comics translate to the big screen.

For years, Frank Miller has been one of the most recognizable names in comic books. His distinctive visual and storytelling styles have made his comics highly influential and adaptable to other media. From Sin City to 300 to his work on Batman, there are ample examples of how Miller’s work translates onto screens both big and small. For years, film producer and Frank Miller: American Genius director Silenn Thomas has been one of the figures working with Frank Miller to help make those adaptations happen.
With the Frank Miller: American Genius available now on streaming platforms, we spoke with Thomas about what it takes to be in the Frank Miller business.
Popverse: You have worked with numerous directors, but I see a high number of auteurs – writer/directors. Much like Frank, who writes and draws and can even direct. What have you found in working with those who can have a consistency of vision as someone writing the script and directing how it looks?
Silenn Thomas:First off, they don’t play witch doctors. They know what they want, and they figure out the simplest and most direct way to get it. But, most importantly, they bring joy to the job, and that joy fills the entire set.
You are CEO of Frank Miller Ink, COO of Frank Miller Presents. What does that entail besides… well… everything?
Thomas:Well, you said it. It entails everything, and as you know well, “with great power comes great responsibility.”
You’ve been working with Frank for a number of years, even before becoming CEO of his shingle. What have you learned about him as a creator?
Thomas:I met him on the movie 300, and one consistent thing with [Frank Miller] is that he is one of the hardest-working people I have ever met. His dedication to excellence is absolute.
Through Frank, you’ve also been exposed to the unique world of English language comics. Coming from a film background, what have been the easiest and hardest lessons you’ve learned about comics?
Thomas:I have found that English language comics – American comics – are a storytelling form all on their own. They need to be respected and adapted, not pillaged.
From what I understand, you met Frank while working as an associate producer on the movie adaptation of 300. What do you recall of your initial collaboration?
Thomas:Yes, it is true I met [Frank Miller] on the movie 300. It was clear from the start that [Frank Miller] was an author and that we had to stay as close as we could to adapting his work faithfully.
You’ve gone on to work on multiple adaptations of Frank’s work. What was the most challenging one to bring to life in live action?
Thomas:Maybe the technology, but he crafts the best canvas. I’d say I would love to work on adapting his Batman faithfully and see how much fun we could have and dazzle all of you.
You directed the recent documentary Frank Miller: American Genius. What did you learn from doing it, and taking it on the road for screenings?
Thomas:I have gained a deeper understanding of comics and itsculture. The project gave me an all-access pass. I saw the universe of comics in every corner of the world. Taking it on the road now at festivals, conventions, and schools has been exhilarating. It was a joy to make, and it is a joy to show.
My editor Chris has told me of how much of a champion and protector you are of Frank in the worlds of comics, movies, TV, and even cons. Where did you learn to be such a carer while also managing the business side of things and standing up for people?
Thomas:At the rebel camp on Tatooine in Star Wars. All jokes aside, what else is there? I believe we are in a creator-driven era. At least, that is the side I’m on.
