The new Ghost in the Shell series on Prime Video looks, at first glance, like a police procedural set in the future. That’s the trap. Watch past the first episode and it turns into something bigger: a show asking what makes a person a person, in a world that has started leaving humanity behind in its rush toward advancement.

Calling that theme relevant right now is an understatement.

The series, produced by Science SARU, walks a strange and effective line. One scene is action. The next is comedy. Then, without warning, it slows down to sit with a real question: In a world where machines can build and create anything, where does that leave the humans who built the machines? That tonal whiplash could easily fall apart in lesser hands. Here, it works, because the show never loses the philosophical thread underneath the spectacle.

That’s not a small achievement, and it’s worth saying plainly: this is the first Ghost in the Shell anime in the franchise’s 37-year history not animated by Production I.G, the studio behind everything from Mamoru Oshii’s original 1995 film through Stand Alone Complex. Science SARU stepping into that role was a risk. It paid off.

Oshii Mamoru’s 1995 film is a landmark. It’s dark, lean, and it influenced everything from The Matrix to two decades of cyberpunk cinema that followed. But ask anyone who’s actually read Masamune Shirow’s original 1989 manga, and they’ll tell you the same thing: the film is a loose interpretation, not a faithful one. It swapped out the manga’s humor and rebellious energy for something colder and more austere. Good film, different story.

This 2026 series goes back to the Shirow’s actual sensibility, the mix of hard science fiction and irreverence that got lost somewhere between 1989 and the movie screen. Shirow himself has endorsed the production, calling it potentially the first installment of a second generation of the franchise. That’s not a line he hands out for free

Five episodes in, the show has earned that endorsement. The opening hooks you with a clean introduction to Motoko Kusanagi: a lethally competent operative pulling off a sting operation that convinces Daisuke Aramaki to bring her onto what will become Section 9. It’s efficient, confident storytelling, and it doesn’t waste time explaining itself.

This is a genuinely great show, and I’m saying that as someone who has sat with this franchise for a long time. It respects the manga more than any adaptation before it, and it does that without turning into a dry, reverent museum piece. It still has jokes. It still has teeth.

The open question is whether it can sustain this. Four episodes is not a full season, and this franchise has a long history of adaptations that start strong and lose the thread. I’m enjoying this one more than I expected to. Now I want to see if Science SARU can stick the landing.
