Not only are they great reads, but they’re perfect starting points for fans of various genres. Let’s begin with a series that will contend for one of the best ongoing comic books of 2026
Daredevil
Stephanie Phillips has brought new challenges into both Matt Murdock’s and Daredevil’s lives. The Man without Fear is fighting a new villain (whom Spider-Man named Omen), and his vaunted heightened senses can’t help him. In his personal life, Matt is a college professor. Both are new challenges that I never knew Marvel Comics’ fans needed
Bleeding Hearts
Leave it to writer Deniz Camp to create a comic book about zombies, give them the most ridiculous names, and have the series be deep. Adding to that depth is artist Stipan Morian, who shows a disgusting and derelict world run by the ruthless undead. But within the bleak art is something optimistic. However, there’s no guarantee that things will continue to inspire hope
Batwoman
Just when you think you know what happens, writer Greg Rucka shows you that you don’t know anything. That’s because he makes you look deeper into the story and the character. In this case, we have Kate Kane (Batwoman) in Greece doing things unlike herself. But are things as they seem? You won’t know until the very end
Sleepy Hollow: The Witches of the Western Wood
Delilah S. Dawson’s Sleepy Hollow: The Witches of the Western Wood is the perfect representation of why IDW Dark is the best place for horror fans. Readers are getting witchcraft, betrayal, an emotional story, and so much more. And the art of Jose Jaro and colors by Xenon Honchar combine to make the gore gloriously gory
X-Men United
Eve L. Ewing’s series has reminded me of what it was like when the mutants had a school. The teachers and headmasters have set out to make things better for the next generation of mutants, but they can’t get along long enough to see it happen. It was so bad that Cyclops tried to sabotage Graymatter Lane
One of the many things I’m loving about this series is the addition of the newer mutants. It’s a chance for comic book fans to get acclimated to them, as they did with the New Mutants and X-Force. Plus, they add a different kind of flavor to the mutant family
If Destruction be our Lot
If Destruction be our Lot follows a robot Abraham Lincoln that none of the other robots like or respect. That, on top of the abuse he takes and the calamitous things that happen to him, makes this a hilarious comic. And while there are some moments that will make you think about how people are treated in the real world, Matthew and Mark Elijah Rosenberg don’t take the series too seriously. I mean, it’s a story following a robot Abe Lincoln that constantly malfunctions.
She-Spawn
Writer Gail Simone is balancing the hellish brutality of Spawn with the snarkiness that we’ve come to love from some of her comics. There’s also some warmth within the lead character (Jessica Priest/She-Spawn) despite everything she’s currently going through. There’s also anunforeseen surprise at the end of the first issue that will keep you intrigued.
Absolute Green Arrow
DC Comics’ Absolute Universe continues to produce dark comics, but the story in Absolute Green Arrow may be the most grim because it highlights real-life horror. Writer Pornsak Pichetshote reminds readers that, even in a universe created by Darkseid, the real monsters can be the ones with wealth and power. On top of that, there’s the mystery of who the Longbow Killer is and if Oliver Queen is just as bad as his billionaire peers
Fall of the House of Slaughter
Normally, politics can be a boring read, but not in this series. Thankfully, writer Tate Brombal has broken up the politics with drama, comedy, and treachery without ruining the flow of the issue. This universe has done a great job explaining the ins and outs of the monster-hunting business throughout its tie-ins, and Fall of the House of Slaughter continues this trend
Barbara Gordon: Breakout
Barbara Gordon purposely got herself locked up to help the innocent people inside of Gotham Supermax. She’s more than capable of solving this mystery, but then she’s caught in one herself. We’re only two issues in, and that means things will certainly heat up as Vandal Savage and Poison Ivy continue their rule over Gotham City.
