Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios brought ‘Lanterns’ to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, giving fans their most substantial look yet at the upcoming HBO series ahead of its August premiere.

The panel featured series stars Kyle Chandler (Hal Jordan), Aaron Pierre (John Stewart), Garret Dillahunt, and Poorna Jagannathan, alongside executive producers Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. Together they discussed the series’ grounded approach to the Green Lantern mythology while unveiling an extended preview packed with new story and character reveals.

Among the biggest moments was the first proper look at Ulrich Thomsen’s Sinestro, who appears to play a significant role in the series. New footage showed the legendary Green Lantern confronting Hal Jordan inside what appears to be an intergalactic prison, teasing a complicated history between the former allies.

The extended preview also highlighted the evolving partnership between veteran Lantern Hal Jordan and rookie John Stewart. Rather than presenting an immediate buddy-cop dynamic, the footage suggests the relationship begins with considerable tension as Hal pushes his reluctant trainee through some unconventional methods.

Flashbacks exploring John Stewart’s military career also featured prominently, providing more insight into why he was selected to join the Green Lantern Corps. Reports from Hall H describe scenes showcasing Stewart’s extraordinary skill as a sniper alongside missions that appear destined to shape the wider mystery driving the series.

While much of the early marketing has emphasised the show’s Earth-based murder investigation, the Comic-Con footage demonstrated that Lanterns won’t shy away from the more cosmic side of DC lore. Alien worlds, Green Lantern mythology, space prisons and the Corps itself all featured prominently throughout the presentation, addressing concerns from fans that the series might be too grounded in tone.

Hall H also received an unexpected surprise when Nathan Fillion appeared during the presentation. Fillion reprises his role as the outspoken Guy Gardner, with the newly released footage giving fans another glimpse of one of the DC Universe’s most colourful Green Lanterns.

Although Warner Bros. has yet to officially release the Comic-Con footage online, reactions from those in attendance have been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the chemistry between Chandler and Pierre, the grounded detective story, and the series’ willingness to embrace the larger Green Lantern mythology.

Lanterns premieres on HBO and HBO Max on 16 August, making it one of the next major chapters in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s expanding DC Universe.
