A gorgeous new PlayStation 5 shooter is out now and getting rave reviews. The game, which is brand-new to the PS5 ecosystem, looks to be a must-have for the year.
Halo: Campaign Evolved is getting massive praise for its PS5 debut
Halo: Campaign Evolved, the remake of the iconic original Halo game, is officially out now on PlayStation 5 for Premium Edition owners. With the game officially releasing for everyone in just a few days, reviews have begun pouring in.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the game has received nothing but praise. On OpenCritic, the game has an overall score of 83, with 89% of critics recommending the title. Many praise its reinvention of the original game and enjoy the the nostalgia trip.
Eurogamer’s Dom Peppiatt praised the game, saying it’s “more successful at being a reinvention of an FPS classic than it is a reproduction — and that needn’t be a bad thing.” IGN’s Michael Higham also had positive things to say, noting the game “speaks to the series’ timelessness and adds a decent set of new missions, but it’s a mostly a lean retread that’s more of a test run for its future with Unreal Engine.”
GameSpot’s Jordan Ramée noted the game is “awesome,” while CGMagazine’s Philip Watson called it “the best way to play the first Halo entry. A must play for returning fans and newcomers previously deterred by aging graphics.”
Like its name suggests, Halo: Campaign Evolved remakes the original 2001 game’s campaign in Unreal Engine 5. Players can play through the story with upgraded visuals, refined controls, two-player split-screen (console only), and with up to four friends online.
Despite being a remake, the new game will feature some modern updates, including the ability to sprint, nine additional weapons (including the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, Needler, and more), and additional “skulls” that will add even more challenges.
Most notable, though, is that Halo: Campaign Evolved will feature three brand-new prequel missions set before the events of the original game. These new missions will include new environments, characters, and new enemies to face off against.
