New PlayStation Controller with Touch Screen Patent Leaks

A newly published Sony patent has revealed the company is exploring an ambitious modular controller design featuring a detachable touchscreen and a rotating navigation dial. The filing, first spotted by MP1st, has sparked speculation over whether this could be a glimpse at what PlayStation has in store for the PS6.

The patent, labeled “20260199776 A1,” was published on July 16 and describes a modular video game controller built around a user input device that attaches to different spots on the controller body.

According to the filing, the device includes a graphical user interface capable of presenting selectable icons, along with a rotating member that lets players navigate or control features by turning it.

Key features outlined in the patent include a detachable touchscreen, a rotating dial positioned on the opposite side of the screen, and magnetic modular components that let both pieces be repositioned around the controller.

The touchscreen is described as capable of displaying menus, settings, messages, and notifications, and it can reportedly be tapped like a smartphone screen or physically clicked.

Turning the dial scrolls through menus, while pressing it confirms a selection. The patent also suggests the display could show incoming phone calls or messages, with gameplay automatically pausing if a player interacts with one of those notifications.

Sony’s Controller Patent: Is It For the PS6 or Later?

Since patents don’t confirm an actual product is in development, it remains unclear exactly which PlayStation generation this controller might be intended for, if it ever reaches consumers at all. Companies routinely file patents for concepts that never make it past the paperwork stage, sometimes simply to prevent competitors from using a similar idea.

According to ComicBook, this particular filing could end up tied to the PS6, a future PS7 console, or even something more niche like a special edition or accessibility focused controller.

With PS6 leaks already circulating around specs and hardware, this patent adds another layer of uncertainty specifically around what its controller might eventually look like.

Will This Be the Return of the DualShock?

PlayStation controllers followed the DualShock naming convention for four straight console generations, spanning the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4. That streak broke when Sony introduced the DualSense alongside the PS5, surprising many fans who expected another DualShock-branded controller to continue the lineage.

That shift has left plenty of speculation swirling around where PlayStation’s controller naming and design go next.

According to ComicBook, this new patent has fueled questions over whether the PS6 controller will simply be a DualSense successor, a revival of the DualShock name in a dramatically different form, or something else entirely.

With the touchscreen and modular design representing such a significant departure from the DualSense’s current layout, some see this filing as a sign Sony may be willing to break from its most recent controller identity entirely.

That being said, it is important that nothing is confirmed until Sony reveals actual PS6 hardware.
