Nintendo has shared a number of comments regarding sales of Switch 2 hardware following the system’s price increase plus early information about the performance of the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake.
During a financial Q&A this week, one investor mentioned that Nintendo Switch 2 sales momentum seems to have slowed a bit after the console’s price went up. However, president Shuntaro Furukawa mostly had positive things to say.
First, Furukawa highlighted how Pokemon Pokopia “helped drive hardware sales globally.” Also, while things tapered off a bit in Japan, Nintendo sees “the current, more moderate level of sell-through as a natural stabilization” – especially given the fast start. As for other regions, thanks to hardware bundles, the company did “not see as significant a shift in sales trends around the time of the price adjustment as we do in Japan.”
Finally, let’s bring up Zelda for a bit. The new 40th Anniversary Edition console “has received a strong response, leading to solid sales across various regions.” As for the just-released Ocarina of Time, it has also had a very strong start.”
“It has been about a year and a half since the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 last June, and with an installed base now exceeding 25 million units, we believe the adoption process has progressed well. While we noted following last year’s year-end holiday season that performance varied by region relative to our expectations, the release of Pokemon Pokopia this past March helped drive hardware sales globally, providing us with strong momentum heading into the current fiscal year.
Subsequently, we implemented a price adjustment for the hardware—in May for Japan, and in September for other regions. In Japan, the Nintendo Switch 2 has seen an unprecedented pace of adoption among our dedicated game consoles since its launch; combined with a surge in demand just prior to the price adjustment, we view the current, more moderate level of sell-through as a natural stabilization. In regions outside of Japan, there was a time gap between the announcement and the implementation of the price adjustment. During this period, we also introduced bundles that included software with the console, and as a result, we do not see as significant a shift in sales trends around the time of the price adjustment as we do in Japan.
Regarding the current situation, the Nintendo Switch 2: The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition – a special-edition console released last week – has received a strong response, leading to solid sales across various regions. Additionally, while it is too early to share specific figures, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has also had a very strong start. We believe we are well-positioned heading into the upcoming year-end holiday season. In our dedicated game console business, sales performance during the year-end holiday season has a major impact on our total annual shipment volume. Given that we have also implemented price adjustments for our hardware, we believe that sales trends over the coming weeks will be critical to achieving our sales targets.”
