The development has not gone down well with the cricket association, which has now formally conveyed its objection to the Deputy Director of Sports.
Ranveer Singh’s upcoming film Pralay’s filming has reportedly disrupted the Under-14 and Under-16 interschool cricket matches in Mumbai’s Azad Maidan, prompting the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to raise concerns over the use of the ground for a commercial film shoot.
According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, the Maharashtra government’s Sports Department permitted the makers of Pralay to shoot at Azad Maidan for six hours. However, the shoot reportedly forced the MCA to postpone Under-14 and Under-16 interschool matches that had been scheduled in advance.
The association has expressed displeasure over the permission granted to the film’s makers and has written to the Deputy Director of Sports, questioning the decision to allow filming at a venue used by young cricketers for practice and tournaments.
The report also stated that this was the first time a film shoot had been allowed at Azad Maidan. The development has not gone down well with the cricket association, which has now formally conveyed its objection to the Deputy Director of Sports.
Speaking to the tabloid, MCA Apex Council member Nadim Memon criticised the decision, saying, “This is the first time a film shoot has taken place at Azad Maidan. Large sets were erected and artificial grass was laid for the shoot of Pralay. This is not a film-shooting venue but a cricket ground where players hone their skills to progress to the international level. Our ongoing tournaments were disrupted because of the shoot. Who will take responsibility for this loss? You cannot commercially exploit a cricket ground by allowing a commercial film shoot.”
Filmmaker Hansal Mehta also responded to the opposition. During a conversation with Mumbai Mirror, he said that filmmakers often face such hurdles while trying to shoot in Mumbai.
He added, “But I would like to underscore that Mumbai has been rendered a no-go zone for film shoots because of bureaucratic hurdles. And people like you fuel the fire.”
Directed by Jai Mehta, Pralay has a screenplay co-written by Vishal Kapoor and stars Ranveer Singh and Kalyani Priyadarshan in lead roles. The film is expected to feature large-scale world-building, with its story set in a zombie-infested dystopian city.
Ranveer is also set to make his debut as producer for the psychological thriller.
This will be his first film following the success of Aditya Dhar directorial, Dhurandhar, the franchise that created records at the Indian box office.
