Teen’s Among Us Chat Message Helps FBI Officially Crack 500

A conversation during a round of Among Us turned out to be the break investigators needed in a case that had troubled authorities for more than 500 days. The disappearance of a then 15-year-old Kylie Arellano from Garden City, Utah, triggered a nationwide search that finally ended on November 1, 2026, when she was found alive in rural Oregon, thanks to a conversation she had with other people online in-game.

Kylie vanished from her family’s home in Garden City on May 29, 2025. Investigators say she had connected online, reportedly through Snapchat, with a man later identified as 39-year-old Adam Hunter Harmel of Huntington, Oregon. According to the federal complaint, Harmel misrepresented his circumstances to her and offered her money to travel to him

However, once she got into his vehicle, he allegedly threw her phone into a river in Logan Canyon before driving her across state lines and telling her that once inside his home, she was not allowed to leave.

During her time there, Kylie struck an online friendship with a teenage boy in Colorado while the two played Among Us together. Through the game’s chat feature, she confided to him that she was being held against her will, and the boy passed that information along to an adult, with the tip eventually making its way to the FBI.

On November 1, a video call to Kylie where federal agents listened in gave investigators the confirmation they needed to move.

Acting on that information, law enforcement, including the FBI’s Salt Lake City and Portland field offices, the Oregon State Police, the Rich County Sheriff’s Office, and the Utah Department of Public Safety, located Kylie that same day at the Huntington residence. Harmel was taken into custody shortly after during a traffic stop roughly 30 miles away.

He has since been charged in a federal complaint filed in the District of Utah with transporting a minor across state lines with intent to engage in illegal sexual activity, and made his first court appearance in Boise, Idaho, on November 4.

If you are a parent, then this case is a reminder to talk to your kids about connecting with strangers who seem to have no ill intent, even inside games that seem harmless. What do you think about an online game helping close a 500-day-long kidnapping case? Drop your opinions in the comments below and let us know!
