In August 2026, Pragmatic Play shrank Zeus. Gates of Olympus POP puts the thunder god beside a portrait-format 3×5 grid, with his lightning still in hand. The original character towered over a broad spread of symbols. This one barely takes up the side of a phone screen. The beard still gives him away.

Other slots have gone in the opposite direction, bringing in anime heroes, monsters and battle sequences. On BGaming’s Adventures, a creature loses health whenever winning symbol clusters appear. The reels are still deciding the outcome, but there’s a fight happening around them.

At Casino.ca, the variety is visible in reviews In its coverage of Canadian casinos, the comparison site puts Gates of Olympus Super Scatter alongside Zombzilla, a slot with a zombie-in-the-suburbs theme. Casino.ca assesses the best online casino options using criteria including game libraries, licensing and mobile performance. Both titles belong to the same category; you wouldn’t mistake one for the other.

Anime Has to Fit on a Reel

There’s only so much room for a character on a phone. A sword might be reduced to its silhouette, or an elaborate costume to one recognizable color. Anime artists have long relied on those kinds of details to make a character instantly identifiable.

Farmagia is a useful case outside casino gaming. Fairy Tail creator Hiro Mashima designed the heroes and creatures for the 2024 action RPG, and the anime adaptation announced that year premiered in January 2025. Those bright costumes and expressive faces didn’t need a new visual identity for television. The monsters in particular look drawn for close-ups, with their expressions doing almost as much as their costumes.

Research published by Attest in June 2026 found that 20% of US respondents watched anime on streaming platforms. On a slot reel, that familiar style has to survive a much smaller canvas. A character needs to be readable as a symbol and still hold up when enlarged during a bonus animation. Some developers settle for a portrait. Others turn the character into part of the feature itself.

BGaming released Adventures in May 2024. Four anime-inspired heroes face a goblin, Cerberus or a dragon beside a 6×5 grid. Over ten spins, winning clusters equip the heroes with weapons and lower the monster’s health. Empty the bar and a bonus begins. Because the meter stays on screen through the ten-spin cycle, even a smaller cluster looks like a hit against the creature.

The developer wasn’t coy about the influence. BGaming game design lead Aliaksej Baliukonis said the studio chose to “go down the RPG route.” The goblin guards a coin-respin round, Cerberus a three-reel multiplier feature and the dragon a chest-selection game. There’s a different payoff behind each monster.

Play’n GO’s Trinity Impact, released in March 2025, builds its fantasy around three heroes trying to protect the Crystals of Lumina. A 3×3 grid takes up the center of the screen. During free spins, Wild symbols transform into orbs; collect three Orb Wilds and the Ultimate Attack feature lets the player choose which hero performs the move.

    The Rules Behind the Fantasy

That hero choice makes sense within Trinity Impact’s story. It also happens at a fixed point in the bonus sequence. The game doesn’t ask anyone to develop a character or navigate the realm of Lumina. It uses the appearance of those activities to give its symbols and features a shared identity.

Gates of Olympus POP relies on recognition instead. Tumbling symbols and multipliers return, but the 3×5 layout is deliberately narrow. Three or more scatter symbols trigger fifteen free spins, all under the watch of a much smaller Zeus.

Screen size is worth considering here. A 2026 Kantar study commissioned by AppLovin found that 70% of surveyed US adult mobile gamers played daily. The research covers mobile gaming generally, rather than casino play. Still, a portrait grid leaves less space for ornamental artwork and gives every character expression more work to do.

What a Bonus Round Sounds Like

Trinity Impact shifts into a battle scene for its free-spins feature, with separate fighting music and character voice acting. A violin-led score gives the ordinary reels a fantasy-adventure mood before the battle music takes over. The change in sound announces the new scene before the player has studied every symbol on screen. The short character exchanges give the three heroes a little personality, too.

Anime has time to do this at greater length. Shangri-La Frontier changed its opening and ending credits partway through season two, pairing Awich’s “Frontiers” with action imagery and CVLTE’s “realitYhurts.” with retro-game-style visuals. A slot feature has no room for a full opening sequence. It can still switch the music when the story moves from reels to a showdown.

The little Zeus in Gates of Olympus POP hardly has room for a grand entrance. He’s tucked beside the grid, lightning ready, as another set of symbols falls.
