A new cocktail bar with pop culture-inspired drinks will open by the end of the month in Bend’s Central District, with daytime specialty coffee to follow.

UN/COMMON Cocktail Cafe will replace Canteen, Campfire Hotel’s former bar. The menu will feature classic cocktails but also drinks based on pop culture themes.

“Everybody can get something out of this menu,” said veteran bartender Justin Fox who created the concept for the space.

While bartending in Seattle, Fox said he started to add cocktails to the menu based on pop culture favorites like Studio Ghibli, Lord of the Rings and Pokemon.

“There’s a heavy influence of pop culture that I just grew up with. I’m an ’80s kid, and when I started developing these menus, I wanted to make it ridiculous and fun,” Fox said. “We did a Lord of the Rings menu, and I think we sold 22,000 cocktails in four months. Ever since that, I found that I enjoy adding fun things to cocktails. I’ve always been interested in going way beyond what people expect, often to the point of absurdity.”

Fox will continue to experiment with different ingredients, techniques and flavors, adding elements inspired by various pop culture characters, moments and iconic creators.

He continued, “There’s a huge community of book readers, Pokemon card fans, anime fans and science fiction fans. It’s an untapped re

The cocktail cafe will spin vinyl records all day. UN/COMMON will open starting with cocktails by Nov. 20. Fox and his team plans to launch a similar, daytime concept with pop-culture themed coffee drinks by late January.

“It’s like a cocktail bar, but instead of alcohol, it’s espresso,” Fox said.

Keagan Parks, general manager at Campfire Hotel said in an email, “We’re really excited to see UN/COMMON become part of the Campfire Hotel experience and the Bend community. When the previous operators left, we knew we wanted to bring something new and different to the space. The direction the UN/COMMON team has taken that space is directly in line with not only our style, but also with what our guests have been wanting for quite some time.”
