The couple tied the knot in 2014, just a year after they began dating.
Adam Brody has some regrets about the way he asked Leighton Meester to marry him.
“I’ll spare the details,” Brody said during a visit to the
Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard podcast, alongside his Nobody Wants This costars Kristen Bell, Justine Lupe, and Timothy Simons. “However, rest assured, it was not as romantic as it should have been.”
The actor, who shares two kids with his wife of over a decade, declined to go into further detail about the proposal, but told his costars, “The only thing romantic about it was the speed. Meaning, like, I proposed pretty quickly into our relationship. We got married fast, but other than that, it was very pedestrian.”
“Like Taco Bell or something?” Shepard quipped, earning laughs.

Brody and Meester first stepped out together in February 2013, and were engaged by November of that same year. They tied the knot in a private Northern California ceremony in February of 2014, and four months later, finally made their red carpet debut as a couple.
Like much of their romance, the duo has kept the details of their proposal under wraps. But, on the Monday podcast, Brody did take a moment to offer some advice to others who might be getting down on one knee.
“I’ve learned, the thing is, at the time [of the proposal], you’re like, ‘Whatever,’ but you’re going to tell this story for the rest of your life,” Brody said. “So, my advice: Do it not even just for the moment, but for the story that you’re gonna tell forever.”
When Shepard, who hosts the podcast alongside Monica Padman, suggested that Brody is just “allergic to pageantry,” the actor agreed that he “certainly” is.
At a later point Brody even complained about the concept of Valentine’s Day, and the big fuss that it requires. “I’m not a big Valentine’s Day person,” he admitted. “I’m just like, state-sanctioned lovemaking, we have to go out to dinner—it’s weird.”
Meanwhile Simons, who stars as Brody’s brother on the Netflix romance series, said that it was no surprise to learn that Brody was “pragmatic” about proposing.
“I can see that from you being like, ‘Yeah, we love each other. Let’s just get married. Why are we going to do all this bull—?’ You know what I mean? Like, ‘Let’s just do it. Let’s just f—— do the thing,’ ” Simons said

Brody agreed. “There’s that. And yet, I do kick myself a little,” he said of the proposal. “She deserved a little more.”
Despite Brody’s regrets over how the proposal went down, the results are pretty undeniable. Meester and Brody have been together for 14 years and are parents to two kids —daughter Arlo, 11, and a son born in 2020. While they keep their private lives out of the public eye, the couple speaks glowingly about their family life.

Asked in January why she believes her relationship with Brody remains so strong, Meester told PEOPLE, “It’s so funny, because the other night somebody asked me that, and I was like, ‘I wish I had the answer,’ [but] I think just liking each other, and getting along is a big part of it.”
She added, “I think being with another person and knowing that they’re going to be imperfect and challenge you, and that you are far from perfect, is [important, and to] always be open and willing to work on yourself.”
