Nigerian students develop VR tools for genomics training

Five teams of Nigerian students have developed virtual reality (VR) prototypes to teach complex genomics procedures, offering a potential new approach to practical science education in Africa.

The prototypes were developed at the 2026 XR & AI Genomics Hackathon hosted by the Institute of Genomics and Global Health (IGH), Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State.

The teams comprised young scientists, Unity developers and 3D artists who transformed the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a technique for amplifying DNA, into interactive learning experiences.

Held from September 28 to October 16 under the theme “From Genome to Impact: XR and AI Solutions for African Health,” the three-week programme attracted more than 196 registered participants, with over 1,000 people joining the online Demo Day.

The hackathon, the second in the series following its inaugural edition in 2025, is part of IGH’s GenomicsXR project, which aims to expand access to genomics training through immersive technology.

Following the development of a virtual DNA extraction module in 2025, this year’s edition focused on PCR, dividing the procedure into five stages assigned to separate teams.

The teams developed modules covering PCR principles, laboratory equipment and reagents, master mix preparation, PCR plate setup, and loading and operating a virtual PCR machine. Participants used Unity for interactive development and Blender for 3D modelling before testing their prototypes with VR headsets in IGH’s laboratory.

Delivering the keynote address, Emeka Odibeli, General Manager of PLLI, cautioned that technology must serve practical needs rather than become an end in itself.

GH Director, Prof. Christian Happi, and Deputy Directors, Prof. Folarin Onikepe and Prof. Anise Happi, emphasised the need to strengthen African representation in genomic data, build local capacity for personalised medicine and promote homegrown healthcare innovation.
