The originalMobile Suit Gundamanime is now available to stream in India on Crunchyroll, with Japanese audio and English subtitles. The classic mecha series follows a teenage civilian who ends up piloting a powerful giant robot after war breaks out between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon.

Set in Universal Century 0079, the story takes place during a conflict between Earth and its space colonies. When Zeon attacks, civilian Amuro Ray becomes involved in the fighting and takes control of the RX-78-2 Gundam, an advanced mobile suit developed by the Earth Federation. Amuro must learn to operate the machine while helping protect the people aboard the Federation ship White Base.

The conflict puts Amuro and the other civilians around him in the middle of a military struggle that stretches far beyond a single battle. The series follows the human cost of war alongside its giant robot confrontations, with Amuro facing enemy pilots who are often more experienced than he is.

Created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino,Mobile Suit Gundamfirst aired in Japan in April 1979. Nippon Sunrise produced the original television series, which ran for 43 episodes before ending in January 1980. The series helped establish the franchise’s focus on military science fiction, treating its giant robots as weapons used by opposing forces rather than simply as heroic machines.

The widerGundamfranchise has since expanded into numerous television series, films, manga, novels, and video games. Many entries explore different timelines and conflicts, but the original series introduced the Universal Century setting and the Federation’s RX-78-2 Gundam.

For viewers looking to start with the franchise’s roots, the originalMobile Suit Gundamprovides the story of Amuro Ray’s first battles and the war that shaped the series that followed.
