Upscaling technology has become as important on consoles as it is on PC. In this regard, Sony has been one step ahead of Microsoft with the PSSR and QSSR upscalers for the PlayStation 5 Pro and base PlayStation 5, but soon enough, this gap will be bridged by AMD itself, which has confirmed FSR 4.1 is coming to Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
“At Xbox, we’re building a gaming platform designed to meet players where they are and make it easier for creators to reach them. AMD has been an important partner in that journey for more than two decades. Together, our teams have been pushing gaming forward across Xbox and Windows, from the silicon at the heart of our consoles and handhelds to technologies like DirectX, Advanced Shader Delivery, and Auto SR that helps developers get more from the hardware and deliver better experiences for our players. Today, we’re excited to take another step forward together with FSR 4.1 coming to Xbox,” said Scott Van Vliet, Chief Technology Officer at Xbox, in a new video shared on YouTube.
“Now, we’ve worked very closely with AMD to optimize this technology, giving developers another powerful tool for great performance and visual quality for players,”Xbox’s CTO continued. “Now, whether you’re playing on an ROG Ally handheld, as well as coming soon to Xbox Series S and X consoles. And this is just the beginning. Our teams are continuing to work together across hardware and software, and there’s even more ahead with Project Helix, leveraging FSR Diamond to power what comes next.”
While details on the Xbox Series X|S implementation of AMD FSR 4.1 are unknown, AMD provided a great overview of the improvements made to the upscaler with its announcement of support expansion to the RX 6000 series cards, AMD Ryzen AI Max processors, laptops powered by AMD Ryzen AI 9 processors, and gaming handhelds featuring AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Ryzen Z2 Extreme, and Ryzen Z2 A processors. As such, we should expect to see significant improvements in games that support it, which will benefit both systems by delivering better performance and higher image quality compared to the upscalers now available to developers for both consoles.

The announcement of AMD FSR 4.1 coming to Xbox Series X and S couldn’t have come at a better time, as Grand Theft Auto 6 is right around the corner, launching in less than a month worldwide. While we do not know if the next entry in the Rockstar Games series will be among the first games to support the technology on Xbox consoles, the fact alone that the possibility is available to developers means that the gap between the console versions of the game shouldn’t be significant, especially if the PlayStation 5 version will make use of QSSR on the base model.
