There’s a big drama unfolding in the collectibles world this week involving a stolen FedEx shipment of cards from PSA. It’s something every person who grades and ships fears could happen, but ultimately trusts that the systems in place will protect and/or sort things out. We’ll see what happens on this one after the involved corporate entities and their lawyers and their insurance companies and the authorities are finished duking it out …
“More than 200 packages containing trading cards valued at nearly $1 million were stolen from a FedEx truck parked outside the California headquarters of grading giant Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) last week, the Santa Ana Police Department confirmed to The Athletic on Monday.
A FedEx truck parked near PSA’s Santa Ana, Calif., grading center was broken into on Oct. 13, the SAPD said. Two pallets bearing an estimated 100 packages each were stolen from the truck while a third pallet had an estimated 50 packages stolen. It’s currently unclear how many total trading cards, which had been graded by PSA and were being shipped back to their owners, were included in the stolen packages.”
Apparently the FedEx truck was parked near PSA’s shipping and receiving area, and the thieves busted the lock to gain access and abscond with the pallets of cards.
PSA’s parent company, Collectors, issued a statement:
“We are aware of a theft involving a third-party shipping vehicle carrying PSA-graded items. We are working closely with law enforcement and the carrier as the investigation continues.
We have deactivated the certificates for the stolen items and notified marketplace partners so they can be on the lookout for rare and serialized items. Our customer service team has contacted affected customers directly and is arranging compensation based on fair market value.
We understand the impact this has on collectors involved, many of whom see these cards as far more than a financial asset. Our team is focused on supporting them. We take this incident seriously, and we will continue working with law enforcement to hold those responsible accountable.”
For now, that’s all Collectors can do, but the sting for lower-case-collectors is going to go far beyond the financial value of what was lost. Yes, these are assets, but the other reason we collect is because there is often a real connection to the cards. It’s a hobby, after all.
As Boston Card Hunter discusses, the total volume lost in the theft could go well into the seven figures when he starts adding up the folks who’ve said they were hit:
As an aside: among the things you COULD steal, I would think a collective of individually-marked and tracked items, whose value drops precipitously if they are altered in any way, wouldn’t be the best starting point. But, hey, no one said all criminals are masterminds.
