An Updated PlayStation Portal (Or Two) Could Soon Be Announced

PlayStation die-hards could soon have a way of playing their favorite console games on the go, if newly leaked information is to be believed. Official Wi-Fi Alliance documents—that’s the nonprofit organization that certifies devices as Wi-Fi capable—point to new PlayStation hardware coming soon.

The documents list two new devices, each of which is classified as a “Gaming Console/Peripheral,” according to documents seen by The Verge. While the specifications of each device are not divulged in the documents, we do have two model numbers to work off of: CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2015. The original PlayStation Portal, which was released in 2023, has a model number of CFI-Y1001. As such, we can hazard a guess here and say at least one of the new models is an updated Portal. Both certification documents mention that the devices run on Android 15. The current Portal also runs Android.

Rumors of an updated PlayStation Portal have been circulating since the very top of the year. Back in January, relatively reliable leaker KeplerL2 theorized that a version of the Portal with an OLED screen might be coming in the near-ish future; another leaker said the screen would hit a max refresh rate of 120Hz, double the current Portal’s maximum. The new documents do nothing to support what, exactly, will be updated in the new PlayStation Portal, though an aesthetic refresh seems more than likely at this point.

But what’s really interesting here is that PlayStation has certified not one but two devices with the Wi-Fi Alliance. Another rumor has been going around for quite a while: that of a dockable PlayStation 6 handheld device. Details of that device are even more sparse than on the supposed Portal refresh, but leakers seem to think it will be launched alongside a more standard, at-home version of the PlayStation 6, with AMD’s Zen 6 CPU and RDNA GPU microarchitecture.

Could the second device here be some version of a true PlayStation handheld? The original Portal, while a solid device, is limited to streaming games from gamers’ home PlayStation 5 systems, while an actual handheld console would theoretically be able to run games right from the device itself. But hey—this could just be two new versions of the Portal, too.

When, exactly, either of these new devices will be released is very much up in the air, though their registration with the Wi-Fi Alliance certainly points to sooner rather than later. One thing’s for sure: given the still-ballooning price of tech components, they’re sure to cost a pretty penny.
