Last week’s best-selling Absolute Batman #24 by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta is the Scarecrow climax. Absolute Batman #25 lands at the end of October (unless it slips into November) as an oversized finale for the current arc. And then the monthly comic goes quiet for the winter. On the Casually Comics podcast with Sasha, Scott Snyder noted, “December, we have off because we planned it with DC. I thought I was like, maybe we sneak in an extra one. And they were, like, you’re not doing it. It’s too much. Let’s just take a break and give it a rest. And December is a rough month for comics anyway, because Christmas, you think it would be good, but it’s harder to get people to the store to buy comics a lot of the time, because people are away, and then they have to focus on gifts and all those kinds of things. So for monthlies, December can be a rough month.” There’s another Ark-M Special in November. Then a Barbara Gordon-focused Absolute Batman #26 is slated for January, “a special issue that I don’t think has been announced yet” that “tells a lot about her… has some surprises” including whoever is drawing it.

Then the main book starts again. Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s next big arc begins with Absolute Batman #27 in February. After the density of Scarecrow, Deathstroke, the death of Jim Gordon, the Robins, Clayface, the framed death of Tim, the big Joker fight, and pieces arriving from every direction, Scott Snyder said the new arc is at a slower pace. “It feels a lot different from this one. I would be spoiling too much if I said why. All these big pieces were set up, and now it’s time to let these pieces breathe. It still has big surprises and characters coming in you wouldn’t expect, but it’s not quite as propulsive.” He called it “more meditative.” Bruce and the people around him are “really unsure what to do next.” Clayface stays in the story, and Scott Snyder hung the whole arc on the idea that clay can still harden into more than one shape. “It’s all about this kind of feeling of clay that could go one way or another. Harden, form this, form that… malleability.”

That is a sharp turn for a book that has spent two years moving like a battering ram. Absolute Batman made its name on scale, a blue-collar construction worker Bruce Wayne with no manor, no fortune, and villains who own the system. The first 25 issues, as Scoyy Snyder framed them, were about their attempts to break that Bruce and to watch him refuse the money, the seat, or the deal.
