Ryan Murphy has “finished the script” for a Glee revival.
The 60-year-old co-creator of the beloved musical series, which originally aired from 2009 to 2015, has given a massive update on a potential return after working on a script with Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan.
He told Entertainment Tonight on Wednesday (Sept 23): “Well, funny you ask, because I just finished the script an hour ago.
“We have a script. Brad, Ian and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something.”
Ryan, who is returning this week with season 13 of American Horror Story, revealed he has been in touch with some original Glee cast members about reprising their roles.
He added: “I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members, and it’s very sweet. They’ve all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.”
However, the writer and producer noted that “nobody’s read” the script yet, and a revival is far from confirmed.
He explained: “Nobody’s read it, so I don’t know; we’ll see.
“I mean, I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, cause we were very close when we were making it.”
The show was set at the fictional William McKinley High School, and followed members of a glee club.
The cast featured the likes of Matthew Morrison, Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera, Heather Morris, Kevin McHale and Darren Criss.
Back in July, Ryan revealed he was considering making more Glee after “so many young people” had discovered the show in recent years.
He added: “My nostalgia and love for that show is enough that I’m like, ‘Well, maybe people would like to see a new incarnation of that in some capacity.’ “
This isn’t the first time the idea of a Glee reboot has been floated by those in charge.
Co-creator Brad told The Hollywood Reporter back in 2024: “Is there a way to tell that story in a more modern way?
“So much of what Glee was about was really this transition from an old way of looking at representation to a new way.
“I’d never say no, but I wonder what the point would be — except it’d be a moneymaker.”
Meanwhile, former Fox TV chief Dana Walden previously opened up about how she had to “teach” fans to embrace Glee.
Speaking as she accepted the International Emmy Founders Award in November 2025, Dana said: “It wasn’t the worst testing pilot in history — trust me — but it also didn’t get the reaction it deserved.
“I learned two lessons that changed the way I work with creators. First, through Ryan’s eyes, I got to understand how harsh criticism feels to a creator – particularly if the story is personal.
“And, second, the feedback wasn’t really for him — it was for the executives.
“It was going to be our job to protect Glee and teach an audience how to understand something different and original.”
