The PlayStation 6 Could Be Sony’s First $1,000 Console

When the PlayStation 5 Pro initially launched, the console was priced at $699. However, due to the ongoing RAM shortage that has made numerous gadgets more expensive, the console is now selling for $900. Is the PS5 Pro worth that price? That depends on what you are expecting out of the console. But the PS5 Pro might soon become the cheaper alternative for PlayStation gamers.

In August 2026, Ampere Analysis, an analytics and insight firm specializing in global entertainment, filed a new report regarding Sony and Microsoft’s upcoming consoles, the PlayStation 6 and Project Helix. According to VGC’s coverage, both companies could launch their “conventionally designed, incrementally improved next-generation consoles” in 2028. However, if they did that, odds are the platforms would retail for $1,000 — this is a real possibility given the PS5 Pro’s price tag. The PlayStation 4 Pro released for $399.99, and the PS5 subsequently launched for $499.99, so there’s a precedent.

Ampere Analysis also stated that if Sony released the PS6 (and Microsoft launched whatever final name they pick for Project Helix) at $1,000, the companies would only shoot themselves in the foot. According to the firm’s calculations, such a price would result in 38% lower sales numbers when contrasted with the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, leading to a market loss of $3.4 billion. At least, compared to releasing the console at a more reasonable price like $700.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t

Between Sony ditching physical disc manufacturing and rumors that the upcoming console will utilize a controller with touchscreen inputs, Sony has quite the uphill battle for its next-gen console. The price could serve as the tipping point in that struggle, but depending on how Sony approaches monetization, it could solve one problem only to create another.

Ampere Analysis offered several pieces of advice to help Sony avoid selling the PS6 for $1,000. These include utilizing hardware subsidies and new monetization models, taking a page out of Nintendo‘s playbook and placing “less emphasis on graphical improvement,” and just simply delaying the launch past 2028. According to reports, Sony might be considering the last one anyway due to the ongoing RAM shortage. In fact, Sony is refusing to confirm any solid release windows. This isn’t the same as saying the console has been delayed indefinitely, but it’s very close. More like a “We’ll sell it when we get a handle on RAM stock and the prices they demand” sort of promise.

Again, Sony has set a precedent that could get in its own way. There was a six-year gap between the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3, a seven-year gap between the PS3 and PS4 launches, and another seven-year gap between the PS4 and PS5. Audiences expect Sony to keep that pace, and according to a report from Bloomberg, breaking it would disrupt “a carefully orchestrated strategy to sustain user engagement between hardware generations.” But one could argue that selling the PS6 for $1,000 or more could have the same effect. No matter which strategy Sony chooses, it stands to lose a portion of its audience.
