Video game developer and publisher <a href="https://comicvibe.com/diablo-blizzard-entertainment-netflix-developing-animated-series/” title=”Diablo: Blizzard Entertainment, Netflix Developing Animated Series”>Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that Diablo V, the fifth installment in the franchise, is currently in development and slated for a spring 2029 release.
The announcement, which was revealed during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 earlier today (Sept 13), came as a surprise to many gamers.
The sequel is said to take place about a century after the events in the fourth game, where Sanctuary, the game’s primary setting, would already have been “annihilated”.
“The heroes are gone, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won,” Diablo IV director Joe Shely was quoted to have
“For the first time, you won’t be fighting to stop Diablo from taking Sanctuary. You’ll enter a world where he already has. There are no towns or safe places waiting to protect you.”
PC Gamer also reported that Blizzard will continue the story of Diablo IV with seasons, but no more expansions are currently planned for the game.
“We’re all focused on [Diablo IV] seasons and getting to Diablo V,” said Diablo game director Brent Gibson in an interview with PC Gamer at BlizzCon.
The announcement caught many gamers by surprise, who noted that Diablo IV was released only four years ago.
In comparison, there was a 12-year gap between Diablos II and III, and an 11-year gap between the third and fourth installment.
“A little soon, don’t you think?” asked a netizen on the Diablo subreddit, in which other users agreed.
“Yeah, it looks like Blizzard sees Diablo IV as a flop,” remarked one commenter, while another said: “It’s insanely soon. It’s like, unbelievably soon.”
Other Blizzard titles that saw major announcements at the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 included Overwatch, Hearthstone and World of Warcraft, with many fans speculating about a rumoured upcoming StarCraft game as well
Japanese duo Yoasobi is also expected to take the stage at BlizzCon’s first halftime show during the Overwatch World Cup, while South Korean girl group Le Sserafim will perform as the convention’s closing musical act.
