Disney+’s ‘Afterlife With Archie’ Reveals the Success of an 84-Year Brand Strategy

The Archie franchise has lasted more than eight decades by doing what many companies struggle with: evolving for new audiences without losing the identity that made it successful.

The most valuable brands are not the ones that stay the same, they are the ones that adapt. Disney+’s upcoming Afterlife With Archie shows how enduring companies remain relevant by protecting their core identity while reinventing how they connect with audiences. That strategy is behind Disney+’s latest greenlight: a live-action adaptation of the Archie Comics horror series from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and artist Francesco Francavilla.

Produced by Warner Bros. Television, Afterlife With Archie is expected to debut around Halloween 2027 and represents a broader business lesson that extends beyond Hollywood: established brands can create new growth by embracing calculated reinvention instead of relying only on nostalgia.

A veteran brand built on adaptation

Archie Comics is one of the clearest examples of a brand that has survived by evolving with its audience. Archie Andrews first appeared in Pep Comics in December 1941 before becoming the centerpiece of his own comic book series. The character quickly became a symbol of American teenage life, and Archie, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Jughead Jones, Reggie Mantle, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and other characters grew into some of the most recognizable names in comics.

Over the decades, the franchise expanded far beyond comic books. Archie characters moved into animated television, live-action series, music, merchandise, video games, and consumer products. The brand introduced generations of audiences to everything from The Archie Show—which featured the fictional band The Archies and the hit song “Sugar, Sugar”—to darker modern adaptations, including Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

The key to that longevity has been a willingness to experiment. While Archie was originally built around high school friendships, romance, and humor, the company expanded into mysteries, superheroes, social commentary, and more mature storytelling. The brand changed its format without losing its core identity.

Reinventing without losing the customer connection

Originally published in 2013, Afterlife With Archie transformed the familiar world of Riverdale into a zombie apocalypse after a supernatural event involving Sabrina the Teenage Witch goes wrong. The concept is a dramatic departure from classic Archie stories, but it maintains the relationships and characters that audiences already recognize.

That balance is increasingly important in today’s competitive marketplace. Companies across industries face the same challenge: how to attract new customers without alienating existing ones. The strongest reinventions rarely discard the past—they build on it.
