Dax Shepard is opening up about the challenges he and wife Kristen Bell have had while raising kids going through puberty.
After nearly two decades together, Shepard shared that he and Bell are “pretty good at handling” their issues. However, on the Wednesday episode of his podcast, Armchair Expert, he explained that this current chapter in their parenthood journey has been an adjustment.
“We have two children and they are going through puberty and that stressor … throws the whole dynamic into a new zone that you have to figure out how, ‘Okay how do we now navigate this?'” Shepard told guests Erin and Sara Foster.
While he shared that it was difficult figuring out their children’s needs when they were babies, it has been an entirely new experience parenting adolescents.
“I think it’s really hard when they’re really little ’cause you care so much about the decisions you’re making with the kid,” Shepard said, noting that he and Bell were “butting heads” with their different ideas of parenting.
He added, “And then there’s a sweet spot, right? Between like six and puberty, you’re like, ‘This is working out pretty good. I think this compromise, however we’re doing it, is working.’ And then a whole new situation comes in. You’re like, ‘F—, well, now we need a new strategy. I don’t know that we always agree.’ And then there’s more stress.”
Shepard and Bell, who married in 2013, share two daughters: Lincoln, 13, and Delta, 11. Although parenting can put a strain on their relationship, the couple keeps their disagreements respectful.
“I like to think if we didn’t have kids, it would be pretty smooth sailing,” he explained. “But we don’t scream at each other or swear at each other.”

The Parenthood alum and Frozenactress are not afraid to get real about their relationship and parenting styles. In fact, Bell recently shared how protective Shepard is of their kids. The couple shared how one of their daughters had been given the cold shoulder by her Valentine this year, frustrating Shepard.
“I was like, ‘I’m gonna f—ing kill this prick,'” Shepard joked on the Monday episode of Armchair Expert.
“I had to lock the doors from the outside with the key just to make sure Dax didn’t knock little boy’s door that evening,” added Bell, who appeared on the podcast with her Nobody Wants This castmates.
