It’s been 25 years since 9/11 changed the very fabric of not just New York City, but the entire country.
And for Pete Davidson, it also means it’s been over two decades since his father Scott Davidsondied while responding to the attacks.
“He was a firefighter for Ladder 118, Engine 205 in Brooklyn Heights,” Pete shared in a video for 9/11 Day. “My dad loved being a fireman, and he loved saving people, as he did on that day.”
And as the Saturday Night Livealum approached this milestone, he considered how to best honor his dad’s legacy—which led him to 9/11 Day and its UNIITE For Good campaign.
“9/11 is usually a tough day, but this organization, 9/11 Day, does something cool where you do a good deed for someone and you pass it along,” Pete explained. “You try to make the day a little bit lighter.”

Indeed, people can head to 911day.org to either be assigned a good deed, or to write one up for themselves. Once committed, the good deed will be added to a map of the United States, with the goal of covering the entire country with evidence of people giving back.
Because not only should the events of Sept. 11 be remembered and honored, but also what happened the day after the attacks: Everyone coming together, putting aside differences, and doing all they could to help strangers.
On this Sept. 11, good deeds can be as simple as calling up a loved one to talk, supporting a local charity, thanking a first responder for their service or donating blood.
And for those who’d like to spend their 9/11 volunteering, users can head over to 911day.org/volunteer to explore opportunities in their local communities.
After all, making a difference can be done with just one simple act of kindness, which is why Pete is encouraging people to make their pledge at 911day.org.
“Together, let’s show up for each other,” he continued. “Let’s unite for good.”
As he noted, “I think my dad would have loved that.”
