Throughout his career, Saif has experimented with a wide range of roles, with Imtiaz Ali’s Cocktail being one of the films that stood out during an interesting phase of his career. Years later, the actor shared what made him say yes to the film and take on the role of Gautam.
Saif Ali Khan admits doing Cocktail was a ‘mistake’
In a conversation with Gulf News, Saif Ali Khan called doing Cocktail a ‘mistake’ and explained that he came on board as a lead actor because he was producing the film and wanted to make sure it got completed. He said, “I did the part because we were producing it; it was an inevitable mistake, 100 per cent that was a mistake, and that was a slightly regressive script choice. Otherwise, it was a breezy, fun entertainer.”
He then further added, “Saif went on to add, “I didn’t do it for the role; I did it so the film could get made. You do things for various reasons. I knew fully well that the exciting role is the Veronica part but it’s one of those things you do anyway.”
Saif Ali Khan calls his casting in Humshakals a misfit
In the same conversation, the actor, who is currently gearing up for his upcoming thriller Haiwaan, spoke about Sajid Khan’s Humshakals that hit theatres in 2014. Looking back, Saif feels that the problem didn’t lie in the film itself, but in his casting. He added, “I personally think that I was a miscast in Humshakals because it’s not my thing. Certain actors could really pull that off, and you need a kind of commitment and the ability to make people laugh on a very slightly different level, which perhaps I wasn’t able to convince myself to do or wasn’t just basically good enough in it.”
He further said, “I think Sajid expected me to do that stuffâ¦perhapsâ¦.like Akshay Kumar could have done it; that was the mistake, but I stand by the movie, and I stand by him (Sajid), and of course, we have to all stand by our movies.”
Meanwhile, Saif is set to be seen in the crime-thriller Haiwaan, starring Akshay Kumar. Directed by Priyadarshan, the film also stars Shriya Pilgaonkar and Saiyami Kher in key roles, and is set to hit theatres on September 11.
