YouTube has clarified its monetization guidelines for graphic gaming violence just months before GTA 6 launches.

The platform is updating its advertiser-friendly guidelines to confirm that videos can earn ad revenue when graphic gameplay appears between eight and 15 seconds into the upload.

As graphic violence shown during the first seven seconds will remain ineligible for monetization

YouTube’s full guidelines now place graphic gaming scenes shown after the seven-second mark in its standard ad-eligible category. Obscured or blurred violence, such as a concealed beheading, can also earn revenue.

The company defines graphic gaming violence as brutal killings or severe injuries focusing on bodily fluids or body parts, including beheadings and dismemberment.

Regular gameplay involving mild violence, minimal blood or unrealistic action remains generally acceptable for advertisers. However, videos designed primarily to shock viewers, such as compilations of players slaughtering groups of NPCs, can still be completely demonetized.

GTA 6 videos could benefit from YouTube change

The timing could be significant for GTA 6 creators preparing videos ahead of the game’s November 19 launch.

In November 2025, YouTube began age-restricting certain gaming content featuring realistic characters and scenes focused on torture or mass violence against civilians.

Those restrictions remain separate from the updated monetization guidelines. YouTube can still deny ads to gameplay depicting sexual violence, graphic torture, hate-motivated attacks, violence against minors or attacks targeting real named people.

Furthermore, YouTube also updated its Recreational Drugs guidelines, clarifying that “gaming and scripted content featuring the use, sale, and promotion of recreational drugs is now eligible to earn ad revenue.”
