While the list of new Netflix movies in September is impressive, the group of new and returning shows this month is equally impressive. The first show on the list is the second season of a crime comedy by Guy Ritchie. The next show is a coming-of-age story set in the unfamiliar world of high school rowing.
The third show is the latest entry in Ryan Murphy’s Monsterfranchise. The fourth entry on this list returns to Hawkins in animated form. Capping off the list is a revival of a landmark show from the 1980s and 1990s.

From a duke to a kingpin
Guy Ritchie loves witty crime capers. The British filmmaker has made a career combining fast-paced action with witty dialogue, resulting in a string of entertaining movies and shows. The Gentlemen, which was first released as a film in 2020, is now an insanely entertaining Netflix show that returns for its second season this month.
A year has passed in this fictional world, and Eddie Horniman (Theo James) is a little in over his head. Season 1 focused on Eddie’s transition from an aristocrat to a drug lord after discovering his family’s underground weed empire. In season 2, Eddie has fully embraced the criminal lifestyle, as he teams with Susie Glass (Kaya Scodelario) to expand his growing empire. However, Eddie might have to expand the empire while balancing a contentious relationship with Susie’s father, Bobby (Ray Winstone).

Crew Girl
Coming-of-age out on the water
It’s been a banner year for romantic stories set within the world of athletic competition. The overwhelming success of Heated Rivalryand Off Campushas shown that young adult fans love sports with a side of romance. Netflix is getting in on the trend with Crew Girl, but instead of finding love on the ice, Teagan Tao (Mika Martineau) searches for romance within the rowing community.
Teagan was a promising single sculler—a rower who races alone—before being forced to relocate to the East Coast with her mother Ella (Jessica Paré). When she finds out her prep school has no female rowing team, she earns herself a spot on the men’s team as the coxswain, the person at the front in charge of navigation. It wouldn’t be a young adult drama without a love triangle. Teagan will have to choose between star athlete Josh Regis (Sam Braun) and the local boy Cam Dillinger (Kyle Clark).

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story
Another monster comes to life
Of the many things Ryan Murphy loves to include in his shows, melodrama and camp have to be near the top. Murphy is keen on telling stories about complex outsiders with rough upbringings, even if these people go on to commit heinous crimes. The Monster anthology series is a quintessential Ryan Murphy production, blending crime, gore, and plenty of mystery.
In 1892, Lizzie Borden (Ella Beatty) was accused of murdering her father (Charlie Hunnam) and stepmother (Rebecca Hall). Monster is more interested in exploring how Lizzie’s troubled upbringing might have pushed her over the edge than in revealing who killed her parents. It’s a psychological thriller as much as it is a crime drama. Plus, it’s a Murphy production, so expect over-the-top sequences mixed with camp aesthetics.

Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 season 2
The Hawkins crew faces a new threat in season 2
Stranger Things, the show I consider Netflix’s most important to date, wrapped up its five-season run in December 2025. Nothing is ever fully over, especially in Hawkins. Earlier this year, the firstStranger Thingsanimated spin-off,Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, introduced a new threat: the Horde Queen.
Spoiler alert: Eleven (Brooklyn Davey Norstedt) and the gang defeat the Horde Queen, but fresh challenges await in season 2. This time, a supernatural creature invades Hawkins, which the kids believe has ties to the Upside Down. It might be an animated show, but it’s nice to return to Hawkins and revisit the crew many came to know and love.

A Different World
The famous spin-off returns after decades off the air
To capitalize on the popularity of The Cosby Show, NBC commissioned a spin-off, A Different World, which focused on life at Hillman College, an HBCU. The sitcom ran six seasons from 1987 through 1993. Over 30 years later, a new crop of students is heading to Hillman for the revival of A Different World.
Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the daughter of original characters Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) and Whitley Gilbert (Jasmine Guy), heads to Hillman and attempts to carve out her own path. A Different Worldis a coming-of-age story about a young girl trying to escape her parents’ shadow while highlighting the voices and beliefs of the Black American experience.
A Different Worldpremieres on September 24.
