In a keynote delivered as part of SiGMA North America’s opening ceremony at the Centro Banamex in Mexico City, the Hon. Edgar Ciceño Velasco, Head of the Global Economic Intelligence Unit for Mexico’s Ministry of the Economy and Secretary General of the National Council for the 2030 Agenda, said SiGMA’s presence shows how Mexico and Latin America are growing in relevance as rapidly evolving industries.
The inaugural Mexico edition of the event runs from September 1-3 and brings together companies and industry participants from across the Americas. As part of the keynote, Ciceño Velasco said Mexico’s gaming and technology sectors are becoming increasingly connectedto areas such as fintech, artificial intelligence, digital services and platform development.
He said the significance of rapidly developing industries now extends beyond entertainment, with technology and digital business models playing a larger role in their development.
“At the Ministry of Economy, we understand that innovation is one of the main drivers for generating new opportunities for growth. Innovating also means opening markets, developing new products and services, increasing productivity, and creating higher-value-added jobs,” said Velasco.
Talent remains central to investment plans
Velasco also addressed Mexico’s workforce and its role in attracting investment linked to digital businesses. He said events such as SiGMA can support connections between companies, investors, and other stakeholders through international business relationships and the exchange of knowledge.
“Our challenge is to leverage these strengths to continue attracting investment, promote new sectors, and strengthen the value chains linked to the digital economy,” he stated. “The development of digital, technological, and business capabilities will be the measure of whether our young people are able to participate fully in the industries of the future.”
For the gaming sector, the comments place Mexico within awider discussion about technology development, investment and workforce capabilities across Latin America.
Velasco said Mexico’s role extends beyond serving as a destination for technology products and services. The country, he said, also has a role in developing, launching and exporting technology.
