DSTLRY has been making a name for themselves over the past year, and their return to San Diego Comic-Con was a memorable one, featuring multiple new series releases, many panels, and a packed booth. Since forming in May 2023, DSTLRY has released hits like Blasknown Mirka Andolfpassed athletethe Eisner Award-winning Somna Becky Cloonan and Turaloteand more.
Unsurprisingly, they still had one last panel to share with fans on the last day of the convention, which included Jock (gone), Mirka Andolf (notorious), and Joel Jones (Demon Slash) Draw in real time as you answer questions in a panel moderated by DSTLRY’s founding editor Will Dennis.
At the beginning of the event, Jock walked onto the stage first, drew his first art work, and showed it to the audience on the big screen. As you looked around the room, multiple attendees were either sketching together or listening intently to the artist’s presentation. The room was filled with laughter all the time.
Dennis moved the group forward, with the first question directed at Jones. He mentioned the new series, through the red window from Ram V Joel Jones said: “It’s like an urban horror film with elements of Poe and Lovecraftian influences, but set in a very dodgy world of finance.” He continued: ” I love talking to artists about their creative process, getting into the details of their workspace or the way they do things, so I wanted to ask, what was the process like when Ram sent you the script?
Joëlle explains that the process differs for each artist. “With Ram, we would get on the phone right away and he would speak a visual language that I could understand. So, the shorthand was taken and then I would start writing the script. If I was feeling exhausted, I would write the script on the page Doodle my first impressions in the margins before moving on to a rough series.
She added that her process is ongoing. When asked if she was working on a physical board or in the initial stages, Jones said she had been working with what was there, even if it was a bit chaotic, and called her approach “traditional.”
Dennis then turned his attention to Andolfo and asked, “Now that you’re done notorious, a lot of what you do is written and drawn by yourself. When you do write, do you write a complete script and then start drawing it? How does this process work?
Andolf paused at her sketch and explained, “I usually write down an outline of the entire story, but don’t provide a detailed plan. Once I have an idea, I jump right into the layout.” She also mentioned that she is more Likes working digitally because it’s smoother for her.
She also said of her physical studio: “I have a physical studio. I’m glad to have it because then I can get out of the work sometimes. Well, once a day. The panelists laughed about it because it’s their Things everyone knows.
Even Jock mentioned how he had a studio in Nashville where he could have a cup of tea and focus on his work. “It’s a bit stressful,” he joked. With a smile on his face, Dennis turned to the crowd and said: “If you imagine the Shire, that’s what it looks like. In some Instagram posts it says ‘studio shot’ and It’s just a green hill with a golden sun rising over it and you look at it and think, “I don’t see any studios. ” It looked very idyllic. This one was quite nice. It got a laugh out of the audience.
The panel was filled with lively discussions and fond memories about their journey, inspiration, and the future of DSTLRY. As the artists share their creative processes and personal anecdotes, it’s clear that their passion for storytelling and art remains undimmed. Fans left the symposium not only with a deeper understanding of the artist’s work, but also with high expectations for the exciting projects and innovative stories DSTLRY will bring in the future.
