D23 2026 was a big one for audiences, with plenty of major announcements related to Disney Animation, Marvel, and Star Wars. One of the most potentially important reveals came during a video game panel, however. Kingdom Hearts, a long-running collaboration between Disney and Square Enix, revealed more info about the next game in the series on top of announcing an anime adaptation for Disney+.

Given the history, popularity, and nature of Kingdom Hearts, this announcement could become the first step toward Disney’s newest major epic. The series is a natural way for the studio to bring all its properties together under a single banner, while also potentially giving Disney a means to appeal to an audience that’s been underserved by the studio for a while. If Disney gets the Kingdom Hearts anime right, it could become its next massive property.

What’s Going On In ‘Kingdom Hearts’?

Kingdom Hearts is a long-running video game series from Square Enix, the publisher behind the Final Fantasy series. Kingdom Hearts takes plenty of cues from that property, while also using the ability to hop between worlds as an excuse to visit plenty of popular Disney locations. In the world of Kingdom Hearts, a mysterious darkness spreading across realities is overwhelming worlds and turning the denizens into mindless beings known as the Heartless. The mystical Keyblade serves as the best weapon against the entities.

While there have been plenty of Keyblade wielders introduced in spin-offs and prequels, the primary plot of Kingdom Hearts focuses on Sora and his two best friends, Riku and Kairi. When their home of Destiny Island is lost to the darkness, they are scattered across the cosmos. Now with a Keyblade of his own, Sora embarks on a quest to find his friends and stop the Heartless. Along the way, he’s joined by servants of King Mickey sent to help the Keyblade wielder: the royal court sorcerer Donald Duck and the captain of the knights, Goofy. Together, the trio ventures across several worlds and encounters all sorts of heroes and villains on their quest.

The ‘Kingdom Hearts’ Anime Could Become Disney’s True Crossover Machine

Kingdom Hearts is an ideal crossover mechanism, as the underlying premise invites a sense of exploration and adventure that can go from world to world. Levels in the first game alone include Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), and The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). Subsequent sequels have branched out of the Disney Animated canon, introducing levels based on Tron (1982), Toy Story (1995), and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003).

Due to the grand scope, emotional throughlines, and the self-aware campiness of turning Mickey Mouse into a Keyblade-wielding mystical warrior, the franchise has always had a unique flexibility that allows it to experiment with tone and style. The fact that the Kingdom Hearts anime will reportedly not be based directly on any specific game but will instead expand the universe is all the more exciting as a result, as it could visit new worlds and play in different sandboxes. It’s a way for the franchises to bounce off each other without having to resort to a single shared universe and could even grow to include appearances from other franchises like Star Wars or the Marvel Cinematic Universe

How ‘Kingdom Hearts’ Could Change Disney

Disney has found itself in a bit of a bind when it comes to Gen-Z. As reported by Variety, Disney has been trying to win back Gen-Z men aged 13-25 after seeing major dips in that audience. The fanbases for Marvel and Star Wars have increasingly grown older. While Disney’s animated fare and musical projects have successfully maintained a healthy female audience, young men haven’t been turning up for the company in recent years. Kingdom Hearts offers a three-fold solution for that problem. For one thing, anime has increasingly become a mainstream source of <a href="https://comicvibe.com/dave-busters-entertainment-inc-to-report-second-quarter-2026-financial-results-on-september-14-2026/” title=”Dave & Buster’s Entertainment, Inc. to Report Second Quarter 2026 Financial Results on September 14, 2026″>entertainment for young men. Video games have also become one of the primary forms of entertainment for the larger global audience, especially with young men.

Kingdom Hearts appeals to both demographics and could do for the company what other video game-coded projects like Tron: Ares (2025) failed to do. The crossover nature of Kingdom Hearts means it could easily bring in other popular fandoms for an episode or a storyline in the anime, reimagining an established property and potentially sparking new interest in the source material. It’s also the kind of massive action property that Disney has been looking for, with a distinct style that breaks from the standard set by Marvel and Disney. Kingdom Hearts, if a successful adaptation, could become exactly the broad hit that the studio is looking for to entice a new generation of fans
