Beyond the tennis matches themselves, there’s another event drawing crowds at the US Open this year: Spider-Man.

For the third year in a row, the US Open partnered with Marvel to release an original Spider-Man comic, tied into the tournament’s 2026 “Celebrating Our New York Story” theme. More than 40,000 free copies were handed out during Fan Week at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Even star players got swept up in the frenzy. Coco Gauff, who won the Open in 2023, posted to her Instagram story asking for help procuring one—or five.

“If someone can get me like 5 of those Spider-Man comics at US Open it would be greatly appreciated.” She went as far as offering an alternative plan. “Or if you guys can pretend you don’t know me for like 30 mins I can get them myself thank you.”

Fortunately, Gauff didn’t have to compromise her safety to get them; the U.S. Open surprised her with the comics, which she unboxed on her TikTok.

While demand for the comic has always been strong, this year, five much rarer collectible covers turned the giveaway into a race to grab one.

Marvel designed each cover around one of New York City’s five boroughs— Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island—producing only 1,000 copies of each. The rare versions were handed out in blind bags to the first 1,000 eligible fans each day from August 23-29.
