Movies and TV series not to miss this september From “Oasis – Don’t look back in anger” to “Adults 2”, the releases to mark on your calendar
Grab pen and paper, because there are plenty of this month’s releases worth noting down. From cinema to TV series, from films straight out of the Venice Film Festival to highly anticipated streaming titles. After all, September has always been the season of comebacks — and that goes for entertainment too. So here is the list of films and series to brighten up the return from the holidays.
Coyote vs. Acme – in theaters from September 2
A story with a happy ending, the one involving Coyote vs. Acme. Initially cancelled by Warner Bros. even though it was finished, the film found a distributor finally bringing it to theaters, Ketchup Entertainment, winning its battle against the Hollywood giant. Which is more or less what happens in the film itself, starring the cartoon Wile E. Coyote, in a story full of fun, justice and laughs.
Train to Busan – in theaters from September 2
Ten years ago Train to Busan was a worldwide success. And yet, despite all the buzz, it never found distribution in Italy. BIM Distribution, in collaboration with Tucker Film, is now making up for it, with a special anniversary marking ten years since the release of the genre film directed by Yeon Sang-ho and written by Park Joo-suk. An adrenaline-fueled horror about a heart-pounding journey, in which a zombie epidemic sweeps through an entire train bound for Busan.
Chad Powers 2 – on Disney+ from September 3
Although Glen Powell was nominated for a 2026 Golden Globe as best actor in a comedy series for Chad Powers, the show has yet to step out of his shadow, especially in Italy. Perhaps it will get its chance with the arrival of the second season on Disney+ from September 3, in which the star and co-creator returns as the football player who, after a mistake that ruined his career, pretends to be someone else in order to keep playing.
Ketticè – in theaters from September 3
Giovanni Tortorici made a surprising debut with Diciannove, released in 2024 and selected in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival. Now, two years later, he returns with a second film in which he revisits the themes of youth, going even a little further back in the age of his protagonists. The writer-director tells the story of teenagers Giulio and Ketty and their encounter in the Sicily of 2012. A funny, stylistically dynamic story, featuring a surprising Monica Bellucci, winner of the best performance award at the Locarno Film Festival.
The Gentlemen 2 – on Netflix from September 3
After the success of the first season, Guy Ritchie‘s series The Gentlemen, a spin-off of his 2019 film of the same name, returns to Netflixon September 3. The story of protagonist Eddie Halstead continues inside a circle of English organized crime, with three Italian faces joining the cast: Benedetta Porcaroli, Sergio Castellitto and Michele Morrone.
Diabolical: The Epstein Files – on HBO Max from September 3
The docuseries of the month is Diabolical: The Epstein Files, on HBO Max Italy from September 3. Through first-hand interviews and investigative deep dives, the project retraces the criminal network of abuse and sex trafficking that involved underage victims. The episodes also dwell on the institutional failures that allowed the perpetrators to carry on their illegal activities almost undisturbed.
Silent Friend – in theaters from September 3
Silent Friend is one of the most beautiful films to screen at the last Venice Film Festival. Written and directed by Ildikó Enyedi, the film — originally due out in Italy earlier this year — finally arrives in theaters on September 3, bringing to the big screen the story of a ginkgo biloba around which three narrative threads unfold. A film about how we are all connected, using the majestic tree at the center of the story as a machine of time and relationships.
Mayday – on AppleTV+ from September 4
The odd couple Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh arrives on AppleTV+ on September 4 with Mayday, an action comedy set at the height of the Cold War. The film follows a pilot on a secret mission who, in order to escape from behind enemy lines, decides to rely on the guidance of an eccentric former KGB agent.
Oasis – Don’t Look Back in Anger – in theaters from September 10
It is probably one of the titles that will draw the biggest crowds at the Venice Film Festival. After premiering at the festival, the documentary Oasis – Don’t Look Back in Angerwill arrive in Italian theaters on September 10. The project follows the Gallagher brothers‘ reunion during the triumphant Oasis Live ’25 world tour.
The Echo Chamber – in theaters from September 10
Andrea Pallaoro picks up a story by Bernardo Bertolucci and works on the screenplay together with Ilaria Bernardini and Ludovica Rampoldi. The cast features three international names: Luca Marinelli, Alicia Vikander and Susan Sarandon. At the heart of The Echo Chamber is addiction — to opioids as well as emotional — of a music producer and his doctor.
Call My Agent! The Movie – on Netflix from September 10
Call My Agent!, like many series, becomes a film. The French show turns into a feature directed by Émilie Noblet, bringing back the characters we got to know over the seasons, now devoted to a new story. It follows former agent Andréa Martel, once again played by Camille Cottin, grappling with her first film as a director. Not everything, however, will go as planned.
Serpenti – in theaters from September 10
Roberto De Paolis arrives at his third film, written by the D’Innocenzo brothers.Serpenti is a tragicomedy about a man who confesses to the murder of his wife. No one, however, seems to take him seriously. The cast includes Leonardo Lidi, Pietro Castellitto, Alessandro Borghi and Valeria Golino.
Practical Magic 2 – in theaters from September 10
The cult classic Practical Magic dates back to 1998. Twenty-eight years later, the sequel arrives in theaters, once again starring icons Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, joined in the cast by the young Joey King and Maisie Williams. The Owens family is once again grappling with the curse that condemns its women, unable to freely live out love. This time the film investigates the origins of the hex, bringing dark secrets to light.
Physical – on Netflix from September 11
Physical Italia: da 100 a 1 is the new reality game show from Netflix based on a Korean format. Personalities from entertainment and sport are ready to face off in extreme physical challenges that will showcase their agility, determination and endurance. Only one, however, will claim victory.
M – in theaters from September 14
Classics are a fixture among the month’s theatrical releases. The titles to catch up on, or finally see on the big screen, are Fritz Lang’sMfrom September 14, but also Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb from September 28. Meanwhile, ahead of December’s event film Avengers: Doomsday, fans will be able to rewatch Avengers: Endgame in theaters from September 24.
Neagley – on Prime Video from September 16
From September 16, Prime Video welcomes Neagley, a spin-off of Reachercreated by Nick Santora, who also developed this new project together with Nicholas Wootton. Actress Maria Sten reprises her role as Frances Neagley, a former army investigator and colleague of Jack Reacher, now working as a private detective.
I figli della scimmia – in theaters from September 17
Riccardo Scamarcio and Fausto Russo Alesi are two brothers in conflict in I figli della scimmia, the story of a father with a disabled son who, in his desire for connection, grows deeply attached to his nephew, creating a certain tension within the family. A delicate, intimate story, premiering in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival and in theaters from September 17.
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story – on Netflix from September 17
The series Monster has reached its fourth season and is this time devoted to the story of Lizzie Borden, the woman accused of the murder of her father and stepmother. A family environment that seemed to oppress the protagonist of the show created by Ian Brennan and Ryan Murphy — the first female figure at the center of the anthology.
Resident Evil – in theaters from September 17
The Resident Evil saga returns to theaters on September 17. Taking the reins is writer-director Zach Cregger, the author behind the already-cult horror Weapons. Cregger calls actor Austin Abrams back into service, this time as young Bryan, a medical courier facing a night-time delivery to the Raccoon City Hospital.
Ritorno a Buenos Aires – in theaters from September 17
Marco Bechis returns to the story of the desaparecidos with Ritorno a Buenos Aires, a film premiering in competition at the Venice Film Festival and in theaters from September 17. The protagonist is Adriano Giannini, confronted with a past that comes knocking again and for which he is called to testify in court.
Heart of the Beast – in theaters from September 24
Brad Pitt stars in Heart of the Beast, playing James Belmont, a former special forces officer fighting for survival in the heart of Alaska, where he finds himself with his dog Odin after surviving a plane crash.
Minerva – La scuola – on Netflix from September 22
A new Italian-made series is coming to Netflix. Minerva – La scuola is a teen drama set inside a military school, where forbidden love stories unfold and every mistake comes at a very high price.
Brothers – on AppleTV+ from September 23
Among the most interesting series of the month is undoubtedly Brothers, an AppleTV+ original in which Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play with the theory that they are brothers in real life. In this fictionalized version, the co-stars of the cult series True Detective find themselves together on a ranch in Austin, where Harrelsonis on holiday with his family, while McConaughey is about to face a new challenge: running for governor of Texas.
The Love Hypothesis – on Prime Video from September 23
The Love Hypothesis was first a literary success by Ali Hazelwood and now becomes a Prime Video adaptation starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman. The two play biology PhD student Olive Smith and professor Adam Carlsen, who embark on a fake relationship.
Unabomber – on Netflix from September 25
Russell Crowe, Shailene Woodley and Jacob Tremblay are the lead trio of Unabomber, a film inspired by real events coming to Netflix. The title is an acronym standing for University and Airline Bomber — what the sixteen-year-old protagonist gradually becomes, and whose past resurfaces decades later, when a manhunt led by an FBI agent brings chilling consequences to light.
Her Private Hell – in theaters from September 30
Nicolas Winding Refn returns to feature films ten years after The Neon Demon.Her Private Hell premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and now arrives in theaters. The film is a horror fable starring Sophie Thatcher, Havana Rose Liu and Charles Melton.
Adults 2 – on Disney+ from September 30
Last month we announced the arrival on Disney+ of the second season of Adults. The series’ release in Italy, however, has been postponed to September 30. An unmissable title for comedy lovers — a show winning over ever more audiences and accolades, as well as being one of the few standard-bearers of the contemporary sitcom.
