5 TV Shows To Watch If You Like Chad Powers

Glen Powell might be known for wrangling tornadoes in “Twisters” and faking a romance with Sydney Sweeney in “Anyone But You,” but he’s already proven that he can perfectly balance movies with buzzy TV shows. In fact, Powell starred in a satirical horror series before conquering Hollywood. He recently returned to the small screen for Hulu’s “Chad Powers.” The outlandish comedy took a more intense route for Season 2, pitting Russ Holliday (Glen Powell) against jealous quarterback Gerry (Colton Ryan).

The second batch of episodes was still outrageously funny despite the new storyline. Whether it was the prosthetic nose coming off mid-game in the opener, or Holliday’s father disguising himself as an elderly southern gentleman who’s equally as wacky as Chad.

The show has consistently balanced a tricky line of drama and over-the-top comedy because of its wild premise. And luckily, there are a handful of shows ready to sub in to fill the void while you wait for “Chad Powers” Season 3.

    The League

We can’t discuss silly sports shows without first bringing up FX’s “The League.” The sitcom does away with all the camaraderie and team-based character growth to focus on the worst group of friends since, well, “Friends.” The show follows a group of friends who are all part of a fantasy football league, and they’re so dedicated to the hobby that they’ll prank, cheat, lie, and manipulate their way to winning the Shiva, their trophy.

Seeing the group try to win the league is obviously pretty funny, but it’s their antics surrounding their efforts that truly make it an underrated show. The prime example of just how ridiculous things get is in the Season 3 premiere when the gang hires an acquaintance called Dirty Randy (Seth Rogen) to film porn in Andre’s (Paul Scheer) apartment.

“The League” is crammed with talented stars, including Mark Duplass, Nick Kroll, Stephen Rannazzisi, Paul Scheer, and Jonathan Lajoie as the main group, with a scattering of truly impressive guest stars, including Jeff Goldblum. With 84 episodes over seven seasons, it’s a great binge watch.

    Friday Night Lights

Group of football players in blue uniforms with white and yellow numbers, holding helmets.

When it comes to sports dramas on TV, “Friday Night Lights” is the high bar to meet. The show focuses on football coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler), who is tasked with getting the fictional Dillon Panthers to victory. It’s similar to “Chad Powers” in the sense that, yes, it’s about football, but that’s not the focus of the drama — it’s everything that orbits the game. Creator Peter Berg uses it as an opportunity to realistically examine the lives of high schoolers and their families through the lens of Coach Taylor.

The 2006 show, which is based on Berg’s film of the same name, shines a light on struggling middle-class America without trit it does so by building it into the lives of the players and students over five seasons, rather than constantly hitting audiences over the head with an underlying message

It’s not quite as whimsical or silly as the likes of “Ted Lasso” or “The Hawk,” but it’s brilliantly written. Plus, with all the praise “Lanterns” star Kyle Chandler is getting recently, “Friday Night Lights” is a great excuse to see what else he’s capable of on the small screen.

    Ted Lasso

While Russ Holliday’s story is sneaky, his Chad Powers persona is weirdly wholesome due to the eccentric nature of the football player. It makes the show warm and fun to watch, especially with the genuine friendship that grows between Russ and mascot Danny Cruz (Frankie A. Rodriguez). Because of the show’s lovable streak, there’s another sports comedy series that is a must-watch: “Ted Lasso.”

Everyone’s favorite mustachioed soccer coach is the perfect companion to “Chad Powers,” as both focus on fish-out-of-water style comedy in different ways. While Powers’ weirdness is what makes him stick out in social situations, Lasso’s (Jason Sudeikis) enthusiastically nice personality is infectious as he coaches the AFC Richmond team in London. He starts out as an underdog who is only hired to drive the club into the ground, but over time, his positive influence on the team has a ripple effect and transforms the soccer culture in the local community.

Plus, Jason Sudeikis is surrounded by an array of British talent, including Hannah Waddingham as AFC Richmond’s formidable owner, Rebecca Welton, and Brett Goldstein as the gruff and eternally grumpy captain Roy Kent. “Ted Lasso” is a light and breezy binge, and you’ll be chanting along to “Jamie Tartt do do do do…” before you know it.

    The Hawk

While “Chad Powers” commits hard to its over-the-top premise, “The Hawk” is a much sillier affair. The zany comedy sees Will Ferrell play Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, a legendary golf player who returns to the competition scene after fumbling his career and taking early retirement. It tees off with Hawkins recruiting a new caddy, Sam (Fortune Feimster), who is just as hapless as the golfer.

Sure, “The Hawk” might veer into slapstick comedy territory, but if you can buy into all of the ridiculous antics, it’s a fun watch. Ferrell’s signature brand of chaotic exuberance dominates every scene here, as Hawkins is as idiotic as he is optimistic.

The show uses Hawkins’ quest to win the U.S. Open as an excuse to create family rivalry, as his son Lance (Jimmy Tatro) has also gone pro, but their relationship is shattered. Throw in Hawkins’ equally strained relationship with his ex-wife Stacy (Molly Shannon), and the show becomes more about a man trying to repair his family.

    Your Friends & Neighbors

Hoon Lee as Barney Choi and Jon Hamm as Andrew Cooper in suits, shown side by side.

If you enjoy Russ Holliday scheming to keep his identity secret in “Chad Powers,” then Apple TV’s “Your Friends & Neighbors” might be your perfect next watch. The series follows Andrew Cooper (Jon Hamm), a hedge fund manager who is forced to start robbing his wealthy friends to fund his life when he’s fired from his high-flying corporate job. Not only is it a stark look at upper-class entitlement in the U.S., but it’s also incredibly fun watching Coop try his hand at being a middle-aged cat burglar and trying to maintain the life his family is used to.

Thankfully, “Your Friends & Neighbors” is more than just a procedural, robbery-of-the-week, type of series — in fact, Season 2 makes it one of the best Apple TV shows of 2026. There is plenty of drama and complicated relationships which overlap with Coop’s extracurricular activities, and it evolves into a broader drama about the community he’s found himself in.

Don’t worry, there are plenty of comedic hijinks, like when he throws his back out mid-robbery and has to be escorted off the premises by his accomplice, Elena Benavides (Aimee Carrero). But while Coop’s criminal career will draw audiences in, they’ll stay to see him fight to keep his family together. Jon Hamm’s chemistry with his ex-wife, Mel (Amanda Peet), is perfect as they try to stay amicable while figuring out how best to navigate their messy lives.
