2026 Comic Book Investing: A Mid-Year Report Card
Comics are serious, solid investments. The market is strong and diverse, with comics from various genres and time periods appreciating in value.
Some of your clients might be caught up in their childhood hobby of comic book collecting, but not so much for fun as for the investment opportunities. The pandemic drove comic book prices into the stratosphere during 2020-2022, a bubble that quickly burst as prices fell back to Earth. What we’ve seen since is a sustainable growth pattern that has opportunities for both novice and experienced collectors. Midway through 2026, some patterns are emerging.
One thing hasn’t changed: While economic uncertainties abound, there’s one investment sector that seems to hold its own year after year: vintage comic books and related ephemera.
Sought-after treasures continue to set new sales records, of course. Earlier this year, Metropolis Collectibles / <a href="https://www.comicconnect.com/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>ComicConnect brokered the sale of one of the most coveted Golden Age comic books – Action Comics #1 (1938), featuring the debut of Superman – for a record $15 million. In addition to being graded at 9.0 out of 10 by CGC, this copy has the distinction of being previously owned by actor Nicolas Cage, stolen from his house and recovered from a Los Angeles storage unit.
ComicConnect also handled the auction of original artwork from Superman #75 (1992), “Death of Superman.” We broke the $10 million mark, with the cover artwork going for $1.875 million by itself. Another remarkable piece of artwork, the “bloody S logo” that appeared on the accompanying black poly bag, sold for more than half a million dollars.
Clearly, the Man of Steel has legs. But the comic book universe is hugely diverse and investors still have opportunities by paying attention to these trends.
Original artwork is having a moment
Comic book art was created to tell a story, and then discarded after publication. But much was not thrown out. And when collectors discovered it wasn’t thrown out, they wanted to possess and collect it.
Bigger ticket items so far 2026 included cover artwork for House of Mystery #195 (1971) by Bernie Wrightson, which sold at auction for nearly $197,000, and a preliminary cover sketch by Dave Stevens, which went for more than $31,000.
There were still plenty of sales of original daily strips (“Blondie,” “Terry and the Pirates”) and other pieces of ephemera that could be had for literally a few dollars.
Collectors are paying attention to rarity
CGC hosts a population website, which shows collectors how many of a particular item it has graded. The fewer the copies, the more valuable they may be.
Rarity can be manufactured; for example, a publisher may publish thousands of a particular comic, but only a few with a particular cover variant. It can also be organic. Older books are rarer because of their age or other features; for example, if there was a tear-out poster, a book that’s intact may be considered rare.
The only known copy of Fantastic Four #48 (1966) graded at 9.9, basically mint condition, is coming up for auction this year at ComicConnect. It introduced Silver Surfer and Galactus, who appeared in the film ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Talk about rare.
Story-telling and characters matter
Iconic characters, whether well-known (Spider-Man) or obscure (Atomic Knight), especially when they make their first appearances, often drive collectability. And you have to pay attention to popular culture because Marvel and DC are famous for dredging up little-known characters, such as Deadpool, and building a TV or movie franchise around them.
But you have to be careful. “Deadpool,” of course, became a hit movie starring Ryan Reynolds. This summer’s “Supergirl,” starring Australian actress Milly Alcock… not so much.
Tips for collectors and investors
These haven’t changed much over the years.
- Set a budget and stick to it.
- Learn everything you can about the market. See what’s selling and for how much. Scope out the trends. Talk to experts. Follow the auctions or attend a comic con – they’re held all over the country. (Fanscon.com has a list searchable by state.)
- Know your “blue chip” superheroes—Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, Flash, Green Lantern, The Avengers, Thor, Wonder Woman and X-Men. Over time, key issues featuring these popular characters have appreciated by 25%-100% in value.
- Look beyond superheroes. Consider vintage books featuring characters like Archie, Little Lulu, Richie Rich, Millie the Model or Mickey Mouse and his Disney colleagues.
- Protect your investment. Store books in a cool, dry place, using acid-free backing boards and resealable Mylar or polypropolene bags. Be aware that Golden Age, Bronze Age and Modern-era books are different sizes.
Comics are serious, solid investments. The market is strong and diverse, with comics from various genres and time periods appreciating in value. And when times are uncertain, tangible investments like comic books can be especially appealing. But the most compelling reason to invest: It is super fun.
