The unpredictable nature of reality shows is precisely what makes them so interesting, and the drama is even juicier when sex is involved. But how exactly do producers handle something so vulnerable?
From serious topics like consent and safety to lighthearted subjects like condoms going missing, these 13 sex facts about reality shows will change the way you look at dating and reality shows forever:
1. Former Love Island Spain contestant Sharon Gaffka published an article explaining just how carefully islanders were monitored, regardless of how intimate they were being. She said, “Cameras, in effect, roll 24/7. There are microphones everywhere in the Love Island villa, including the bed headboards. Welfare checks are regular, to the point that producers even monitor how much water contestants are drinking. Producers are physically nearby almost all the time.”
However, Gaffka also claimed “welfare in reality TV is often reactive, not preventive,” because the people in charge of contestants’ emotional, physical, and sexual welfare are the same people responsible for creating entertaining television that keeps viewers coming back.
2. Many reality shows have systems in place to ensure consent is obtained. On Love Island Australia, each islander has a “consent button” by their bed that must be pressed before any sexual conduct occurs.
Former islander Georgia Murray explained how the heart-shaped buttons worked in a 2024 TikTok video, though the buttons haven’t become a feature on any other version of the show since then.
3. On the Netflix reality show Too Hot to Handle, contestants literally pay to have sex.
The point of the game is to encourage authentic romantic relationships by banning sexual contact of all kinds, and participants who break the rules rack up fines that come straight from the winner’s prize fund. Every kiss, cuddle, and hookup costs a set amount of money. A kiss is worth $2,000, while sex costs a whopping $20,000.
Oh, and contestants on Too Hot to Handle also answer to an omniscient robotic cone.
4. There’s been some debate about how producers on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette provide prophylactics. While The Bachelor alum Chris Soules revealed that condoms and “extra stuff” were provided on the nightstand, “like a normal bedroom,” Ali Fedotowsky remembers it a bit differently.
“I think maybe they give [condoms] to the guys, which is crazy,” she toldEntertainment Tonight. “They should give [protection] to the girls, too, but I think they just [give condoms to the guys] to make it not awkward.”
5. Dating Naked UKmade history as the first unscripted (aka reality) dating show to use an intimacy consultant throughout every aspect of production and filming. The intimacy coordinator is responsible for ensuring everyone feels safe, heard, and respected during filming of anything vulnerable.
6. Another UK reality show, Virgin Island, brings virgins to a remote island to work in a group and one-on-one with therapists to help address anxiety around intimacy. It has been the center of controversy since it began airing in 2025.
“I think there may be a misconception around the last season, in a sense of ‘oh my goodness, these older therapists are grooming these young people, and they’re just sort of rushing them into this room and doing these things’.” Virgin Island contestant Joytold Cosmopolitan. “[But] actually behind the scenes that young person would have had to sign on three times on, and on camera as well, and say ‘I consent to doing this’.”
7. On Love Island USA Season 8, episode 34, Aftersun host Ciara Miller asked a few eliminated islanders, “Is it weird getting down and dirty in bed while having cameras on you?”
Season 8 contestant Titi confirmed, “Yes, absolutely,” while another contestant, Dylan, agreed. “You just go for it.”
8. In her book, Bachelor Nation: Inside the World of America’s Favorite Guilty Pleasure, Amy Kaufman shared that one STD was the most common reason potential contestants were rejected from casting.
“As soon as the medical tests came back, you’d see that herpes was the biggest thing,” said Ben Hatta, Mike Fleiss’s old assistant. “And sometimes you’d be the first person to tell a contestant that they had herpes. You’d be like, ‘Uh, you should call your doctor.’ Why? ‘We’re not going to be able to have you on our show, but you should call your doctor.'”
Kaufman’s book also revealed that contestants on The Bachelor should have “no expectation of privacy.” Their contracts require them to be filmed 24/7, if needed by production, and also allow the use of “hidden cameras and microphones.”
9. Love Island USA‘s two-drink rule is one of the franchise’s most famous behind-the-scenes facts, but former islander Phoebe Siegel revealed that one drink per night seems to be the norm.
10. The biggest spenders in Too Hot to Handle history are Nathan Soan Mngomezulu and Holly Scarfone, who racked up $141,000 dollars in fines throughout their season. Fortunately, they redeemed themselves by earning back $90,000 after spending a celibate night in a private suite.
11. Toward the end of each season of The Bachelor, the Bachelor will take their three final contestants on a beautiful vacation, where they each get a chance to spend a night as a couple in the fantasy suite. But what happens in the fantasy suite, and when exactly does it happen?
Ali Fedotowsky toldEntertainment Tonight that “most do sleep with the people in the fantasy suites,” and that all three overnight dates happen within the same week. “It’s like one day, one off night,” she said, “so it’s every other night.”
Reality shows may be fun to watch, but the vulnerability it takes to participate in one isn’t for the faint of heart. Putting your heart on the line while the entire world is watching is one of the bravest, and scariest, things a person can do!
