Nintendo used its June 2026 Nintendo Direct to confirm that a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is on the way to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.

What Nintendo still hasn’t shown is actual gameplay. So far there’s only been a brief teaser from that June 2026 Nintendo Direct, and nothing else since, which means everyone’s still guessing about how this remake really looks once it’s in motion.

That alone has split the fanbase. Some see it as an obvious win for new hardware. Others think a game that already got another pass with 2011’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, plus years of Unreal Engine fan remakes, never needed a full remake in the first place. The teaser also kicked off a whole separate argument about style: should Nintendo lean realistic or stay more stylized, can the original atmosphere survive the update, and, in Japan especially, whether new additions like voice acting belong here at all.

If Zelda’s history matters to you, this is one to keep an eye on. The 1998 Nintendo 64 original sold more than 7.6 million copies, according to Nintendo, and it still sits at the top of Metacritic’s all-time scores, according to Metacritic. That’s part of what makes this such a risky move. Right now the remake is still scheduled for Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in 2026, though an ESRB rating and Nintendo’s November 2026 amiibo plans both hint that the real release date may not land until later in the year.
