YouTube has clarified when graphic gaming violence can earn ad revenue, with changes coming ahead of GTA 6’s launch

YouTube has updated its advertiser-friendly guidelines for graphic gaming violence, clarifying when videos can remain eligible for advertising revenue ahead of the launch of GTA 6.

Under the updated rules, graphic gameplay shown between eight and 15 seconds into a video can earn ad revenue. However, graphic violence appearing during the first seven seconds remains ineligible for monetisation.

YouTube defines graphic gaming violence as brutal killings or severe injuries that focus on bodily fluids or body parts, including beheadings and dismemberment.

Obscured or blurred violent scenes, including concealed beheadings, can also remain eligible for advertising.

Less graphic gameplay involving mild violence, minimal blood or unrealistic action is generally acceptable under the advertiser-friendly guidelines.

However, content primarily created to shock viewers, such as compilations showing players killing groups of non-player characters, can still be fully demonetised.

The changes come ahead of GTA 6’s scheduled November 19 launch, potentially affecting creators preparing gameplay and other coverage of Rockstar Games’ upcoming title.

YouTube introduced separate age restrictions for some gaming content in November 2025, including realistic scenes focused on torture or mass violence against civilians. Those restrictions remain separate from the updated monetisation rules.

Certain types of violent gameplay can still be denied advertising, including sexual violence, graphic torture, hate-motivated attacks, violence against minors and attacks targeting real named people.

YouTube has also updated its Recreational Drugs guidelines. The platform now states that “gaming and scripted content featuring the use, sale, and promotion of recreational drugs is now eligible to earn ad revenue.”
